My only problem with PEX and the flexible Rapidair systems is it looks sloppy when on the wall.

So I’m planning out my future garage build. I’m thinking about using 3/4 air brake hose with brass quick connects. Anyone else ever use it
Run black pipe. The steel lines pull the heat and condensation out of the air as it is being used. The rubber lines will not do that.
Run a 1" main line down the middle of the shop and add 1/2" drops wherever you need access to the air. I never get moisture in any of the clean outs unless I have been running the compressor hard for a few hours. Before I hard lined the shop I ran from hoses and ALWAYS had to use a water filter before any air tools. Now I don't.

as long as you are confessing, have you recently

* used a cheater pipe on your vise handle?
* bought something at Harbor Freight?
* ever forgotten to unfurl the star and stripes on the 4th of July?
* looked askance at snapon tool?
* put beans in your chili?
* surfed websites that have "girly" pictures?

get it all out, you will feel better

You been looking over my shoulder?

Plus, copper is prettier and easier to work with IMO.
I need to extend a copper air line in my basement. Just a simple matter of cutting the existing line with a tubing cutter, sweating in a tee, and running the new line. Imagine all the extra work using BIP. After seeing all the rust build-up inside old black iron pipe air lines, I would never use BIP again.

And that is a GJ issue as we all know!

Only PVC guys and Glock gun owners would think sloppy is OK....

I hate sloppy. My RapidAir setup is zip-tied in the roof of my shop. Doesn't look too bad, but mainly because I don't look up that often. I didn't think of a better way to run it until someone here said "You could run it inside 1/2" EMT like the rest of your shop". Well f*ck me! What didn't I think of that?

I still haven't fixed it, but I'm going to one day...maybe.

I get the humor, but the idea was to use EMT as a sleeve to contain the flexible Rapidair tubing.

LOL, you are probably right. Someone will misread this and try to use EMT for their air lines.

Years ago I was installing a schedule 80 pvc 3" plastic water main. The line was being pressure tested to somewhere around 80-90 lbs. There was about a quarter mile of this stuff pressurized. The ditch was wet and muddy. We began backfilling the ditch and a large rock hit the pipe squarely. Man what an eruption. Scared everyone and luckily no one was seriously hurt just covered with mud from the eruption. Learned my lesson then and there about pvc and air.

That must have been really something!
I just did the math for the volume of a quarter mile of 3 inch PVC pipe. I got close to 500 gallons.

Think of eight 60 gallon compressor tanks all plumbed together into one output and having that pipe shatter.

The quarter mile pipe would be worse because there is no restriction like in the compressors comparison. Air flows pretty fast through a straight 3 inch pipe. Wow!

I bought a roll of PEX at least 9 months ago to replace the PVC. There aren’t many folks using it, but they are out there. Of the approx 85 feet, only 6 will be exposed to sunlight and it will only be indirect.

Look into D.O.T grade nylon air brake tubing it's cheap and is good for over 150 psi, found on every semi on the highway. I run 3/4" tubing to 1/2" pipe elbows it car found pretty cheap at truck parts stores and if you like even comes in different colors. Fast and easy to install flexible easily repaired if needed.

Exactly what I am doing in my shop, and I work for the company that makes the nylon air brake tubing, so a call to inner company contact scored me a free 250 ft roll of 3/4" OD black nylon air brake tubing. It's working pressure rated to 150 psi and burst pressure rated to 500 psi. Its also rated for -20 F to 250 F temperature wise, and can easily handle some oil in the lines. Nylon is non reactive to oil or water.

If you want to get fancy, Parker Hannifin makes the Transair product:

Which brings up the question?........brazed or weld fittings on EMT........what would be expected pressure to failure ?

Edit .....Any reason not to use rigid conduit for air lines Was discussed in 2007.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10186&page=2

I don't think it has a pressure rating. Black pipe does.

And I think the issue of concern is the possibility of galvanized flakes coming loose and getting into your air tools.

I did copper.....about the same price as black pipe...but unless you have a piper threader right there, too time consuming.
