PVC Transition to Romex

This is probably so simple that I'm just missing it. I have THHN wire in PVC conduit feeding into my basement from my generator inlet box. I now want to transition from the PVC conduit to romex to feed into the transfer switch. My reason for the changeover is just to make it easier to bend the wire around a couple of corners and a few obstructions. Conduit would be possible, but there would be just too many bends and turns. All the PVC jnction boxes have hubs to glue the pvc to the box. My thought is that I would use a metal junction box, allowing me to use the proper clamp for the romex, and just feed the conduit into the box using a male adapter and a locknut. I think it should be ok, but I just thought I'd get some input from the great people in the Garage Journal. Thanks.

Just be sure to ground the metal box, and use a box sufficiently large for your connections.

That's exactly what I did.

A plain 'ol 4x4 or 6x6 pvc junction box will have no holes - you drill your own. You're looking at switch/recept boxes with the hubs - which would work as a junction box, but not in your case.
