Q? for the snap-on junkies...

so, i was informed by a family member that I may be receiving some brand new Snap-On ratchets. These would actually be my first Snap-On tools... just never could spend that kind of money on a ratchet myself. then, it got me thinking that not sure I really want to own Snap-On stuff... have no access to a truck if I ever needed something.

so, don't know how much the family member paid for these, but what are these worth: T72, F80, and S80? Not sure where he got them, or how... was told those were the model numbers and that they were brand new. Are these older ratchet models? will my world view change by using these over the Gearwrench ones I got on sale for $7-$18? How much could i get if I re-sold them?

I wouldn't worry about needing to replace them especially if you use them at home. If you do need them serviced or if you want another tool in the future you can buy tools online or call Snap on customer service. Customer service can help you find a local dealer or even facilitate replacing a damaged tool. In the mean time enjoy your new ratchets.

Those are current models. You might get $200 for them if you resold them and they are new.
If I didn't already have them, I certainly wouldn't sell them.

yes, they will be used at home, but I am a pretty busy home DIYer; mostly because friends/neighbors/family ask me to help them with their cars (mine haven't required as much work). Even right now, I have in the queue waiting for a free weekend: 1) need to drop a differential and re-seal on a BMW 5-series 2) 4-wheel brake job on a BMW X5 3) suspension overhaul (struts/shocks/springs/ball joints/bushings) on a van 4) water pump job 5) another brake job, just fronts 6) stereo retrofit on a friend's Mercedes G55 7) another front brake job on the neighbor's 5-series BMW 8) oil change on another neighbor's BMW 9) gauge cluster repair on a friend's X5... i've got enough work for every weekend for the next 2 months i think... granted, because I've been so busy, i do some times just put it off and tell them that I'm spending time with the family this weekend or that weekend... so the list above will probably be done over 3 months. point is, i do use my tools regularly, just not in a pro shop... my day job doesn't require a wrench or ratchet.

as far as I know, Snap-On doesn't just mail you a new repair kit or something if you call them do they?

I would keep them, they are very nice ratchets.

maybe... i mean, it is a very nice gesture of this person to get these for me; i help him with his car all the time and so I take it as his gesture of appreciation for my help. but in a way, i sort of feel like this is a luxury item... and i'm just not comfortable with that. i don't wear jewelry, no expensive watch/no watch at all these days, i don't wear fancy clothes.. just a cheap pair of jeans and a plain white t-shirt... hell, i don't even own a iphone or ipad, i do just fine with an older generation phone and android tablet that i got for cheap. i feel at home and at ease with the trusty Gearwrench ratchet I got for $18 that hasn't failed me. I wipe it down and clean it before I put it away every time and I'm proud that $18 investment has served me well. I don't know what this person paid for it, but I'm guessing the S80 alone is over $100? ... owning such a ratchet just makes me feel like those girls who wear $400 pair of jeans... just not me...

strange... i know i would never have bought myself snap-on ratchets... but now that I may actually get one, I'm starting to realize it's not just the price that has kept me away...

Give them a try, I was raised in Craftsman my whole life and thats what i owned for the better part of 15 years. I always thought why do i need a truck brand tool?? When i started school for auto repair i found out why the truck brand tools were so nice to use. Now i own mostly Snap-On and Matco not cause im a nut hugger, because the ratchets, and wrenches are like butter to use and you feel it every time you use them. If i gave a gift to a buddy like a Snap-On ratchet set and i found out he sold it, id be pissed.

Maybe its just me, but if I give something to someone and they turn around and simply sell them I would be pretty pissed. To me that screams of either not appreciating the tool or the gesture.

Be polite, and either accept the tool to keep/use or decline it all together.

Once you realize just how smooth the Dual 80 action is you will never want to use a lesser ratchet again.

At least give them a try before you condemn them as something you don't like. There's a reason why everyone likes them so much and pays so much for them. This is a good opportunity to try something new that might not normally have a chance to try.

luxury item... and i'm just not comfortable with that. i don't wear jewelry, no expensive watch/no watch at all these days, i don't wear fancy clothes.. just a cheap pair of jeans and a plain white t-shirt...

Yet you have multiple BMW's :lol_hitti

It is just a tool, and a free one at that, I think you are really taking this to far.

Personally I think the snap-on following is kind of silly and I do not own any,
but what I get rid of some free ratchets? HELL NO.

anyway, i'm going to hold on to them and try them out at least.

as for owning BMWs... it's just a car that I happen to like the designs of Joji. plus, all my BMWs are almost 10yrs old and only 1 of them did i buy new. The 1 BMW i bought new I got because I was able to negotiate the price down by $18K and so I couldn't pass that up. Had I sold that car a year later, I would still have made a few grand in profit. Anyway, some see the brand as "luxury" i suppose, but it's really not that different than owning a Toyota, which I also have. If I had a lamborghini or ferrari, then you can tell me to go shove it...

Good lord, someone wants to give you free new Snap-On tools. Say thanks and quit lookin' in that horse's mouth.

I agree with ^^^^.
Those are the top of line tools. Don't worry about "servicing" them. They are made to last through your lifetime and your grand kids.
Those have the 80 tooth gear head, except the 1/4". That's 72 teeth.
I am professional tech. I use those day in and day out. "there is a difference"
There is truth to that.

I understand your situation 100% and you have my deepest sympathies in your most unfortunate predicament. Fortunately for you I'm in just the opposite predicament and have been desiring said ratchets and therefor am in a position to help you get rid of them. :pimpflash

Sorry, but I look at owning a BMW as a luxury item. You could get by driving a Lumina or Buick Regal. You have an older generation phone and tablet, I own neither. In fact i don't even own a cell phone. Using a Snap-On ratchet, which was given as a gift is the same as a $400 pair of jeans, isn't even close to being the same.

And to be blunt, if i gave you 3 brand new Snap On ratchets and you sold them, because they are too much a luxury item, I would be pissed beyond belief. That is just dumb and very inconsiderate.

that's what I was laughing about. He works on all these X5's (probably the worst BMW in terms of repairs ever made so he should have a lot of tools) and doing suspension overhauls and is working with a single cheap0 Chinese ratchet he got for 18 dollars. The guy is basically operating like a pretty advanced BMW tech, with that as his day job, with some **** ratchet. Too funny.

The whole post is too much in more ways than one. I don't think this post is in any way serious, but it fooled a bunch.

As comparison to your jeans analogy the most expensive of those ratchets (s80) retails for $125 a craftsman 1/2 ratchet retails for 22.99. So snap on costs 5.43 times as much.

$400 dollar jeans Vs wrangler @ $22 The $400 dollar one cost 18.18 times as much.

Additionally quality tools are an investment, you get what you pay for.

Who in their right mind would sell a "gift"? If some1 gave me a gift I would use and cherish it for as long as I have it. Now if times were tough and I were forced to sell it to put food on the table then that's a different story. And this is a tool forum... That said you should definitely use them once and if you don't like them which I seriously doubt then give them back.

I am not telling you to shove it, I just find it ironic your car is "just a design you like" yet all the other things you listed are "pretentious".
