So I ordered these in for building boxes at work. E Torx impacts. SK, still marked USA. I ordered them from either Grainger or MSC. Need to double check. Also need to double check the product listing. Because oooh boy, I don't know how these made it through QC. 🤣 Maybe it was a Friday or something. Super thick wall on one, no chamfer on the other. Rest of the set looks fine. They weren't crazy expensive, but they weren't cheap either. Industrial account and all that. Check it out 🤣 We can goof up just as well here in the USA as anywhere else in the world. My personal Pittsburgh, Sunex, Tekton, and Icon pieces are more consistent and a lot less WITHOUT any industrial account 🤣🤣

The wall thickness is all over the place in that picture, haha. The socket next to the extra-thick one looks like a thin-wall. The low chamfer socket might have some use as a specialty tool. The extra-thick socket will be indestructible.

Grainger making it right. In my experience, they've always been solid when something goes goofy.

Getting a replacement set sent. I have three other sets in transit. Here's hoping this one was the fluke 🤣

Probably should have just bought some Snap-0n from eBay
Nah. If I was gonna get Snappy for this round, I would have to email the industrial rep, get a quote, get the funding approved, then pay... Then wait. 🤣 We love our red tape. These were on our preferred internal marketplace, which has fewer steps involved. Lol. Still red tape, just less of it. We're not opposed to Snap On, but I am putting together multiple boxes (and buying some extra for auditing existing boxes), and even keeping it mindful, the cost adds up real fast.

The whole set looks weird. There is probably zero quality control on a product like that.

Yeah, you got me🤣 I forgot about the fake Snappy wrench thread. The consistency within the set probably would have been better 🤣

If you need them to be impact sockets, you may want to verify with SK. Some of their e-torx and e-torx plus sockets were black oxide (not chromed) and also not impact rated.

Struck out 4 for 4. That's gotta be some kinda record. 🤣

This sort of proves that the issue was ā€œofficialā€ and at the manufacturer, during set assembly, since grey market, and ā€œsecondsā€ sets would likely have a mix of the wrong items depending on what was available in a dumpster, and these sets are consistent, as if someone assembling a batch of sets just grabbed the wrong bins for the assembly line.

You sure it’s not on purpose? One day I was being autistic with my tekton impact sockets and a caliper and I noticed wall thickness was alot different. I realized they were cheaping out on the blanks. Idk the sizes offhand but say 20mm 21mm 22mm all used the same blank then the wall thickness on the 21 might be perfect the 22 might be too thin and the 20 might be too thick.

i realized outer size of three sockets in a row was exactly the same

since you got multiple sets like that and if you look the weird ones are same outer size as the ones next to them it looks like they share a blank

They probably do share some blanks across close sizes. However, one E18 of the 4 has some additional finish work done to it. The E20 across all 4 is unusable. E Torx need that chamfer at the mouth for proper fastener fit.

Considering these were bought for issuing out to technicians, we could have lived with a certain amount of variance. Usable was the goal. We've (coworkers and I) have found other reviews online with similar complaints. These were purchased from an authorized vendor, through our preferred marketplace. Gov goofiness I know. So it's highly unlikely they were grey market salvage seconds. The listing made no mention of being blemish sale items either. So it's just a big ol' whoopsie doodle 🤣 Funny as that may be, I also consider it quite unacceptable.

Edit: these sets are now on extended back order. I don't have high hopes that the replacement will be any better, and the three later arrivals pictured are being refunded back.

Fifth time is the charm?
This is the replacement set that Grainger sent. Not perfect, but at least usable. On catalog or not, these won't be my first choice for purchase in the future. At least I have a set to hook someone up with a decent spread of sizes.
