Shocked there isn't more options for these. I'm kinda thinking I might be further ahead buying two used boxes and building a bench over that, or even two of the harbor freight boxes.

I'm in the same boat. Tool storage + bench.

However, I really don't want to hammer on the top of a toolbox, so I think I'm going the SteveO route of a HF box or two, inside a steel frame.

I figure the boxes will be $800 (or a bit less if I wait for a sale) and $100 ($200?) in steel, plus $?? for a top. Perhaps a plywood and 2x4 torsion box covered with steel. $100 for paint, hardware and consumables.

In any case, I'll have a bit over $1,100 for lots of storage and a solid platform to bolt a vise to.

The CL ad looks good, but it's more than I'd want to spend. Besides, I love a good project.

Looking for a nice bench with a solid top to mount vise, would like something with plenty of storage. Any ideas?

Found these on Craigslist but its alot of money to spend without a brand to research it's quality.

Really odd. Most companies who use 1/8" steel also use 500# drawer glides. The metal is Vidmar or Durham territory but then they use a $10 drawer glide? Odd.

Is this a bait and switch where some good stuff is used to justify ad copy but balance is 22ga?

"The metal is Vidmar or Durham territory"

Not even close, as compared to a Vidmar or Lista, either would weigh almost twice as much as the Craigslist units. Each cabinet section of Vidmar/Lista would weigh >310lbs.
Agree, I would not mount a vise on these or even a Vidmar/Lista unit, and expect to use a hammer. Corrected from 350 to 310 being short width cabinets

Laminated 2x lumber can take a lot of pounding.

9ft weighs 750lbs or 916 lbs? 12 ga steel? Yes, that is Lista or Lyon neighborhood. Why the cheap flyweight drawer glides with heavy steel? Is the top included in the weight? Is most of it made from 24 ga?

This is just odd. Deliberately deceptive?

Impossible by weight or price. The Cr guy is shoveling it as to 12ga or his micrometer needs serious calibration.

Deceptive to me, likely one piece of the unit is 12ga (possible the drawer pulls?), A standard Vidmar unit, same build (as 916 cr unit, 5 stacked cabinets, would be in the weight territory (checked the catalogue) of..
5 short width cabinets@ 310= 1550lbs, wood 100lbs, total 1650lbs minimum .

Best move economically. With a steel frame, strong enough, you could pound to your hearts delight without rattling the guts of the cabinets.

Absolutely. Buy a big drawer box, take off the wheels, make a few end cabs, add a maple bench top. Mine cost me less than $500 (not counting the Wilton). And since the top is actually supported by the end cabs, you can hammer on it...

Only the top workbench is made with 12ga steel (their website specifies its 2mm steel, which is more like 13-14 gauge).

Looks like everything else is 1.5mm steel which is about ~16 gauge. Still more stout than almost anything you could buy at Home Depot.

Its very nice looking, but I would prefer the tool chest under a metal frame workbench. You also get a lot more options in dimensions and drawer layout.

Steevo is a better option.

I think I might prefer naked forklift mobil work benches and stationary toolboxes at eye level. Still wondering best way to do that.

I think stationary workbench storage might be best done by wooden drawers with wooden glides. Two guys on YouTube are perfect examples. Names escape me.

Storing partial completed jobs like a Euro watchmakers bench from Timothy Wilmots is an idea that needs exploring.
