Quality Garage Doors?

Hi all,

I need to replace the old wooden garage doors on my house (8X7) and I'm having a hell of a time finding quality doors.... I have a Lowe's and a Home Depot right next to me but reading the reviews on their doors makes me hesitant. They're breaking/bending on first use or first winter.

What manufacturer/door do you recommend? I don't necessarily need them to be insulated. I'm just looking for ones that aren't cheap junk.

Thank you!

I got my doors from the Overhead Door Company, they have a store here in my town.

If you let us know where you're located, people will be more able to provide recommendations.

I bought last year Hormann garage door, as was recommended from a few GJ members here. It did not disappoint. Very well made, and insulation was great in our Michigan winter. It made a very big difference in the winter and summer. It kept my garage cooler in the summer.

Hi all,

You have them, they’re on your garage.

In all honesty, if they’re solid wood garage doors, I’d do whatever I could to repair/save them. Price out wood garage doors, you’ll see why. I’ve got both metal garage doors and solid wood garage doors, and they’re night and day different. The solid wood doors are quieter and better insulated. I’d never replace them with box store garage doors

Love my Wayne Dalton Thermospan 150's. I have one that is 24x14 and another one that's 16x14. Both commercial quality.

Unfortunately, i don't have them. :(

I bought a short sale two years ago and have been fixing it up. The previous owner didn't do much over the past 15 years...including fixing the gutters. Decades of the gutter falling off the house has directed water directly on the doors and they are rotted beyond repair. One good kick and you can enter the garage haha. I'm finally moving on to addressing the outside and first up is getting new doors.

Congratulations on the house (two years late), and I’m sorry to hear about the condition of the doors. I’ll follow this thread to see what you und up with and how you like them.

I have Insulated Clopay doors, quiet, strong, rated for HVHZ use https://www.clopaydoor.com/residential/windcode-residential-information/florida-windcode, we are very happy & satisfied w/them. They keep the temperature down, this is south Florida.

We used a local installer/retailer, and while he wasn't cheap, he did a good job of installation and coordinated with our GC when the garage was being built. The front of the garage is north-facing, which is good for Florida, it reduces the heat-soak especially in the summer. The building wall on the north-side is entirely poured steel-reinforced concrete, so it's about as-strong as you could expect a residential SFR could-be. This is Florida, if a hurricane comes, the garage may-be the strongest room in the dwelling.

Front-of the garage sealing is very-good, and even in 60+ inches of annual rainfall, the doors are absolutely-dry, even-after multiple hurricanes.

We have Liftmaster wall-mount openers, with the automatic deadbolt solenoids, automatic remote lighting, and there are other features you can use with it, such-as MyQ internet/phone-controlled operation, security, and notification. They are very-quiet in operation.

All the major door companies have a wide range of products, including paper thin entry level junk. You need to talk to someone who knows about their product, and you won't find anyone qualified at a big box store. Find a local independent and talk to them. Most won't even sell the junk the box stores do, regardless of the brand.

I have Clopay Coachman series, insulated garage doors. They are warm n tight, and have added to the comfort in the shop. They also look pretty sharp. Like swing out carriage house doors. And they weren't that much more expensive than ****** big box doors.

I don't see how you could buy an 8 by 7 door bad enough to really bother you. That's the smallest door made; if you don't hit it with the tractor, it'll be fine and last 30 years. Then you can paint it and it'll last 100.

Personally I have never seen one at Lowes or Home Depot that really had anything wrong with it (I have 7 on the house/shop). You can't hit them, I admit. They're thin.

I mean, look above. Clopay is a major big box supplier and they make a good door. I put two on the shop when I built it and probably it was a $300 door.

I am still in search of the perfect door for me, and winter is fast approaching. Went through last winter with no doors ( garage framed and roofed but not finished inside or out). My sister just installed two middle of the line Clopay doors from Home Depot. They were not cheap ($6k for a double and single installed with side mount openers) and look like a nice door to me.

I believe that you can get a cheap or quality door from a big box store, or an independent dealer. You get what you pay for, and quality of install is important. I have yet to see a GD install that I would call done "right", as I hate the erector set track framework at haphazard angles, etc - but I'm sure most people never notice.

Midland is a nice door, but like most others -I am not happy with the cheesy window grill system they use.

I'm currently considering the Amarr Classica line as they will do an 8' tall door in 3 sections instead of 4 which makes for a much more proportionate looking window in a carriage style door.

It depends on what you want out of your door- look around, talk to distributors, and end users of doors that you like the look of.

Good luck

If you have a local garage door place, I would check them out and see what they can do for you. I found out that the local garage door place was able to sell me a better door and they installed it and the total price was less than what a big box store wanted for a cheaper door. Just because it is a bog box store does not mean the price is less. It is like Amazon, not everything is cheaper when you buy for them.

10 yrs ago HD installed a Clopay metal-foam-metal door for us. I don't know how it fits on the quality scale but it still works and looks just fine.

We just had 18x8 and 9x8 Clopay Doors installed by a Long Time 30+ year reputable installer. We bought them through Home Depot and they gave us a 10% Veteran Discount also. I thought the prices were reasonable and the doors are beautiful.

We chose the Gallery Edition doors in the BEST grade with an R18.4 insulation value. We self installed new Wall Mounted Liftmaster 8500W Openers which I highly recommend.

I installed 2 of the 8 by 7 doors from Lowes/HD about 8 years ago and although thin, they are doing well. They are on a rent house so I"m sure tenants are harsher on them than the average person and no issues so far... I hope I didn't jinx myself...

We have 4 Wayne Dalton doors with no issues between them. 2 are 14 years old and the other two are 10 years. The wife's door which used to get the most traffic (up/down) had one spring break which was fixed for about $50.

Whether you think you need them or not, spend a few extra bucks and get an insulated door. You never know what the future will hold and besides that, the insulated door will really boost the rigidity of the door.

After an exhausting hunt, I only spec Amarr doors.

Everything that went into the design, quality, warranty, and service I couldn't pass it up!
Hopefully you can find a local Amarr dealer.

Go with chi doors. I use to install and service overhead doors. CHI is where it's at. Also I would recommend marantech openers with a 1 piece rail

I vote CHI and Liftmaster 8500 openers. I'd avoid Overhead Door, they are never going to offer the best value. Good product, just over priced. Find a local private guy. I actually found my garage door guy on Craigslist - just vet them thoroughly.

Big range in garage doors, need to decide what features are important to you and shop based on that. I'd ask for nylon coated rollers instead of the cheap steel ones, that and a good opener and it will be much quieter.

I had 25 year old CHI insulated doors on my last house that were still in great shape when I sold it this year.

my Holmes (Clopay) doors came in and they look nice, but several panels were damaged. Took a month to come in and now I'm facing probably another month for replacement panels. The new color for 2019 is charcoal and my wife picked them. The color looks nice, just wish the doors were not damaged in shipping. I went with the gold series 1 3/8" with better insulation. Right now I'm wishing I had gone 2", but not sure that would have kept them from being damaged seeing how they were obviously banged up.

I have two CHI doors that were put in when we had the place built 15 years ago. Haven't had any problems that were the fault of the door. They are insulated with metal on both sides. Nothing special - just their regular stuff. There are several dealers in town so easy to get parts. The only reason I know is I used the cheap, small door bracket that came with the opener when I installed in on the large door (18 x 8) and it eventually pulled the screws out when I failed to keep the door lubed. But nothing was really damaged and I picked up a bracket that spans the height of the top panel. Easy install and should have had it from the start but I didn't know any better at the time. That's the only issue I have had and they still work fine.

I just finished my shop and I went with the Raynor Aspen. They are r19 and well built. I also went with the high lift and liftmaster 8500. The doors are the first thing people ask about when they come to the shop.
