So it all started with a 20' x 24' garage and a few too many hobbies. But a little back story first.
My name is Kevin And I am from Montreal, Quebec. I found this site a while back, but never really had much to post. Well now I do. I am an avid outdoorsmen, and love to work on basically anything with a motor. So when my girlfriend and I started looking for a home, I knew I needed a garage, the bigger the better.
My girlfriend and I moved into our first home in July of this year. A 30x50 bungalow on 20000 square feet of land. Along with it was a 20x24 detached garage, in decent shape, but needing the roof redone sooner rather than later.

We knew this going in, and I had originally planned on adding a carport to the side in order to store by boat in the winter months. But the more I thought about it, I decided It would be more logical to add on. More on that later.
The other thing that drove me crazy was the tiny garage door that was on it. It was 8’ wide, by 6.5’ high. I found a steal of a deal on a 16’ insulated door and decided to go for it.
2 weeks after moving in, I restructured, cut out the front wall and installed the door.

I decided I was going to add 10 feet to the side of the garage, spoke with the city, and was informed that would be too large. Due to local building restrictions, I was only allowed 60 square meters for a detached garage.
So I was limited to roughly 10' x 15' added onto the existing garage.
I drew up my plans, and after many weeks of back and forth, had my permit in hand.
4 months after moving in, it was time. With the help of a couple friends and a concrete truck, October 22nd I poured my slab.

From then on it has been a mad dash to get ready for winter.
Removed the siding and got ready to start building walls.
I decided to build the addition while leaving as much of the original building in tact as possible, as I still had all my belongings in there and didn’t want to have anything stolen. The wall would be demoed after.
I spent a day framing up all the walls
First load of lumber

First wall up

Second wall

Three of three

And then another day with my Dad’s help framing up the roof
Second load of lumber

Working on the roof

Cutting into the existing roof, at this point, I had to get it closed in that day.

About a week went by with a tarp on the roof, and then It was time for shingles.

Going to do the other side in the spring, but for now it’s water tight and looks awesome.
Then it was on to the interior, which currently looked like a bomb went off.
Gutted the original wall, and found evidence of water damage from bad flashing, and began the installation of my load bearing header.

Built a temporary wall to support the roof load

Installed my header (made of 9/16” ply laminated together)

And cleaned up
The rest of the garage still looked like a bomb went off, but at least one part didn’t .

Got the outside 80% ready for winter with felt paper on and my window in

The new space is now organized.
I call it my “toy-room” as the thought all along was that the motorcycles and bicycles could go in there, my boat on the right side of the garage (in the winter) and still be able to work on a car on the other side.

And that brings us to today.
The “toy room is 90% the way I’m thinking it will stay organized. And the garage I think will evolve with time. For now its organized enough that I can work in there very happily, but there is still room for lots of improvement.

That's a nice layout you have now. Good work.

I can't imagine what they were thinking putting that one tiny door on there.

I really like that extension.. great job. Lots of interesting things inside as well. Thanks for sharing.

Must have been a bouncy ride home in your truck with all that lumber hanging out the back :)

Nicely done. I need to replicate a version of your addition to my shop. If you're able, it would be a great tie in to existing if you could extend your addition roof and create a covered sitting or storage area. Not sure if you can sneak that under code...

Hey Kevin, I recognized the pictures of the garage extension you posted on facebook. My names Ryan, we were a year or 2 apart in Mech Tech at Dawson.

The build is looking great, looks like you'll have a nice spot to work this winter.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!
I will be redoing the other side of the roof in the spring, than all the siding will come off and be redone. Planning to change the colour to more of a brown/gray to match the house. for now things are mostly done inside, will probably just be working on organization/storage and lighting. Planning on 6 4' double fluorescents in the main area, and another one in the toy room. Also planning on making a sort of garden shed jotting out in the back. It will be a semi temporary structure for all my garden shovels etc, to get them out of the garage.

Just curious, do you mean in front where the tree is? or off to the side?
And by the way, I love your garage build. It is giving me WAY too many ideas.

Forgot to mention one other project I've gotten done since we moved in;
When we got there all there was was an old ratty workbench that looked like it was just slapped together.

So I tore down the original bench,

gathered some cut-offs from work (I work at a company that makes laminated panels for train) and some 2x4s and made myself a bench that I actually would want to work at.

The top is .040" aluminum plymetal (overall thickness 3/8") with 3/4" Marine ply underneath. Plenty stout for working on.
The shelves are just .040" aluminum plymetal (overall thickness 3/8")

the bench is 3 pieces, one main bench, the bench with drawers, and the bench over the compressor. it comes apart with 4 screws if ever I need to service the compressor.

All right kids..... I graduated from Mech Tech at Dawson too. Only, I graduated so long ago I was in the first CAD class (before AutoCAD was offered), and the first Robotics class when the lab was originally built! I was also a lab assistant helping out CAD newbies. That was a while back.....

Even though your city codes limited your addition size-wise, your new footprint is great. I'm sure you'll enjoy playing with your various toys in there.

Live, glad the build has given you some ideas :) I did mean the tree side..and now I realize the tree is not in front, but beside your shop. So that would make a roof extension pretty hard to do :)

Well I actually have in my permit the right to take the tree down , but I decided to keep it for the moment as I kind of like it

Great job on the addition. Like the new workbench too. And the pine (I'm guessing) on your walls creates a very soothing work environment.

Can't wait to put her through her paces !

Another tool manage to fall in my hands the other day. I'm now the proud owner of an oxy-acetelyne torch outfit! After many years of wanting and needing a setup, I finally have it.

Alright, so the past few months haven't been all that productive as far as working on the garage has been concerned. Good ol winter. Got a good amount of use out of it and came to terms with things I liked, and didn't like. First thing I didn't like was the lighting, the two fleurescents I put in lit the garage meagerly at best. I just added another 4 to bring the total to 6 in the 20x24 space and I would say it's adequate.
Now I'm back at it with the outside, going to get things finished up out there in the next couple weeks than start organizing and hopefully adding some memorabilia on the walls inside.
I Managed to get all the soffits closed in on the addition, all the fascia, and drip edge done this weekend. I also finished one wall of siding. Going to start ripping off the old siding tomorrow and see how far I get, Can't wait to see the finished product!

Soffits done

One wall done

I hear you on winter..not much goes on in my shop when it's -30 outside, regardless of heat. I've realized that working with the doors open and fresh air blowing through is one of the draws of the work space :)

It's always satisfying to integrate construction work by making the external aesthetic consistent. Always feels like a new "reveal". Your exterior transformation is coming along great :) Loving the look.

Thank you for the compliments! Got a bit more done today and hoping to get one side finished tomrrow and maybe start on the front. And yeah, its definitely much more motivating to get things done in the garage when you can be out there in a T-shirt and with the door open.
I did get quite a bit of work done on other projects in the garage this winter despite the cold, just didn't get any work done on the actual garage.
Did a LOT of welding projects this winter, but at least that's warm work haha.

Got some more work done today after work!
One more wall is finished, and one more started. Happy so far with my pace.
Next step will be stripping the top part of the front, adding the mounting plates for the lights next to the door, and adding my octagonal window up top. once those are in I'll finish cladding the front and move onto the side. Can't wait till it's all done!

Well I haven't had the chance to post my progress the past couple weeks. Some other projects have come up and I've been waiting on some scaffolding to be able to finish the top areas. Picked up the scaffolding today and now I'm back in business! should have it all done in the next week or so. Here are some pics of where I'm at as of today

Obviously the while siding on top will be coming off, and I have an octagonal window that will be going up top.

can't wait!

Well got a fair bit done the past two days. Pulled off all the siding from the upper portion of the garage front, framed in and installed my octagonal window, and got up the main part of the front top siding. SO MANY CUTS!
All the cuts were done by hand, and wow, getting one piece of siding to fit all the way across and around the window was interesting. But was rewarding to have no seam on top of the window.
Anyways, enjoy!
Hope to finish up the small portion that remains tomorrow after work, and then move on to the back. We're in the home stretch!
