The three problems I have with this tool are:
- tips don't hold the ring securely
- tips bend under load
- pliers don't open wide enough.

This particular tool goes into my "rarely used, but invaluable when needed" bin (or, as the wifey calls it: the "why do you need all these tools" bin), and one plier with swappable tips works well in that schema. The solution may just be to get myself an ample set of fixed-tip pliers with good leverage.
I'm kinda in the same boat - rare use, but a critical thing when I need them kinda thing.

I've never heard anyone complain about the Snap On (other than price) - I forget

Knipex is, by all counts pretty great, and less brutal when it comes to price. But not exactly budget-friendly either at ~$190

I have the Icon set several people have posted here, and they've been fine. Good engagement, nothing has launched into oblivion, nice case and $75. Occasionally they're on sale for as little as $50. The tips have held up fine, but I can't really say that's the result of anything more than occasional use.

If I needed them just a bit more often, I could have probably talked myself into the Knipex set.

Got a pretty inexpensive set on amazon. Pretty happy with them. I can’t stand the stamped ones.

Have had a set of Blue Point convertible style for 40 years broke a few tips over the years but they have served me well for most of my needs. Recently bought a pair of Channel Locks convertible style and broke tips first time I used them. The pliers themselves seem well made but tips are awful. Bought a few pairs of Wilde fixed tip and they seem very well made. Used them when I rebuilt my transmission with no issues. Have a couple pairs of large ICONs and they also seem very well made. Used them on wife's Mercedes front end. Want to get the ICON set that's made in USA they look nice but don't have any experience with them. I've also used various Snap on needle nose pliers over the years with no problem.

Agree. Once I used the forged KNIPEX models I’m spoiled and can’t go back to stamped. It’s the twisting and struggling and cursing I do with these things that really benefits from the meaty forged units.

You do know that you have to have the right size of pliers to start with. Quality pliers are a must. Snap-On or Knipex are good. That combination has worked well for me
