Just curious about this after reading a number of posts here referring to 100% solids product.....

Is 100% Solids product low (or no) VOC. It seems that if there is no solvent to evaporate it would be by definition but I'm no expert on the subject.

Anybody here know?

100% solids means that there is no solvent to evaporate. There is Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Content). In addition, it means that there is nothing to evaporate... not even water. I make that distinction because many here would not consider water to be a solvent.

So, if a coating has anything that evaporates at ambient temperatures then it can not be 100% solids.

When coatings with solvent are applied it is critical that they are not applied too thick. If so, then they can skin at the surface and trap the solvent within the coating. In the case of solventbased epoxies the trapped solvent will promote yellowing and can also make the area painted stink for months as the solvent slowly escapes. The surface will probably also be highly porous, have defects (like low gloss and poor appearance), and will be wear prematurely due to poor abrasion resistance and poor film integrity.
