On all of my Knipex fine cutters (I.e. not bolt cutters), there is absolutely no gap, even on ones with moderate usage. Same brand, the needle nose has a gap only when uncompressed. I was told you want the tip to touch first and not the other way around or you will never grab with the tip.

On my Bahco fine diagonal cutters there is a small gap uncompressed.

The origin to my questioning is how Snap-On, for a time period, was very proud of their "power edge". It appears the "Power edge" is no longer available on the website and all have now transitioned to the "vector edge".

On lineman pliers like Kleins, you want the "cutting knives" to touch first so that you have some allowable material to take off for sharpening. If the tips touched first, you would never be able to sharpen the knives; that's why they make them that way. Proto lineman pliers are the same way.

Snap-On pliers are like that, various reasons listed including blade protection, to small and large cuts. Not a defect, every brand does it different.
