On an Esab 252 which had been hooked to 480 with 4 wires. I assumed 3 phase….. the rating plate reads as follows:

It looks as if it can run on single phase? From the manual I know it can be configured to run on different voltages including 220. However there wasn’t anything really clear about 3 phase or not, just consult rating plate .
This machine is coming out of service and I’ve used it a lot, was wondering about the prospect of buying it for my home shop. I do have 220 single phase there at least. I would not care about not being able to use the full power of this rig.

Always assumed it was a 3 phase, the wiring looked as if it was, but the plate confuses me.

Thanks, I was looking at the manual in some detail and you are right. There were 3 wires plus a ground on the power plug so thats why it threw me off. The best I could manage in my shop would be 220 single phase at 60 amps with a little work. I have 30 amps in there now, and I can run my Lincoln 225 at a moderate setting, well high enough to do what I want. I have a Hobart MIG and a home-brew TIG unit now, it works reasonably well, but I love this ESAB. Usually, with equipment like this that is taken out of service, we have a silent auction where anyone who is interested puts a bid on paper and puts it in a box, and the high bidder can buy it. It didn't break down, we just had some surplus funds we had to "use or lose" so they bought a new Miller. Oh well, I have my eye on the old drill press also. I missed the old Bridgeport a few years ago, but I was broke as hell at the time.
