Question about fire code.

I have an attached garage to my home, and when the home was built, the garage was insulated and sheet rocked with a 5/8" fire code and then plastered. A few years later I added an additional garage onto the existing one, and what was the outside wall that has texture 1-11 on it is now the inside wall of the additional garage. When this garage was added on, it was never sheetrocked or insulated. I am now planning on having it spray foam, and will be adding 5/8" fire code sheetrock. My question is, do I need to cover the T 1-11 with fire code sheetrock also? If so, would it be best to just go over it with the sheetrock, or does the T 1-11 need to be removed first? Going over it will be the easiest and most cost-effective. Your thoughts? thanks Junk

I'd cover it if you don't want to hassle with removing it. I'm not a fire marshal or building inspector.

If you need permits and inspections I'd ask before you start.
The thinking used to be that the party wall between garage and living (sleeping) spaces needed a certain fire rating.
A garage addition to a garage..... common sense would say your already protected, but we know where beauracratic "creep" leads to.

The drywall needs to separate the garage from living space. If the t1-11 is just on a wall inside the garage, you are fine

I agree with Mike. Here's the chart from 2018 IRC. Note that in code terms, this is not "rated" construction.

Seeing as some people finish wall thier garages with OSB I don't see much of a difference between that and T11, as long as a living shared wall is drywall.

Because the new addition is cantilevered off the original garage exterior wall, there is no living space above, just the roof.

I would agree as long as there is no attic connection to the dwelling. Somewhere between new garage attic and dwelling there needs to be min 3' of exterior or a drywall separation. Admittedly, very unlikely there is any connection or required separation. A gable to gable to house gable connection is possible.
