Question about Fleck water softener?

Is Fleck the name of the entire unit, or just the control head? For example, on Craigslist I see advertisements for a ...

"a 48,000 grain capacity, 1.5 cu.ft. resin tank with Fleck 5600 SXT metered control valve " Does this mean that the unit is not a Fleck, just the control valve?

Or an "Ultima water softener with a 5600 Fleck Econominder".

I'm not asking the difference between the Econominder, SE, or SXT, but rather, what exactly am I looking for when I see 'Fleck' advertised.

Fleck is the manufacturer of the valve assembly -- the part that screws onto the tank + the powerhead that tells the unit what to do. No matter the brand of unit -- Fleck is the primary supplier of valves -- some companies make a Fleck knock-off also. I personally like the Autotrol line of valves by Pentair -- no pistons -- just flappers to control the water.

So the Ultima, or what ever tank is underneath it isn't as relevant as long as it's the 5600 Econominder? - if that's the model I want.

Yep -- the tanks that I see on a daily basis are from various manufacturers - primarily Enpress & Structural. The Fleck 5600 series is pretty universal, easy to work on & maintain. What size is your tank -- should be a sticker on it somewhere that details the size of the tank, operating pressure, etc.? Not sure how far you are from Tolleson, AZ but give the Nelsen Corporation a call -- they are a large supplier of everything related to water. 866-445-4299 or 602-442-0203 Good people to deal with & very knowledgable.

I'm on the other side of the valley from them, but I'd love a referral for who would be a good person to purchase and install it from

Wish I could help on the referral part -- if your part of the country is like here [western PA] there is a bunch to choose from. If you contact Nelsen --- talk to a sales rep & maybe he can suggest an installer close to you that buys from them on a regular basis. Culligan, Kinetico, etc. are prevalent around here -- not that I would recommend them though. Maybe check the better business bureau + talk to friends who might have a system. Let me know what you find out -- I'll check with my Nelsen contact & see if he has any input. Keep me posted - if I can help, I will.

I bought mine from qualitywaterforless.com it's very easy to install yourself if you have any plumbing skills. I called in to order, because they'll guide you on what size is appropriate for your household. BTW, I have the fleck 5600 sxt, and it is very user friendly.
