Question about gear pullers

Is the screw point essential to the proper operation of a gear puller? The point on many older models (such as the one shown) I come across are well worn. If the puller functions fine in every other way is it still considered to be in good working condition?

I always thought that little point was there to Dig into the piece to keep it from getting off center while your putting the wood on it. I would think the puller would still work as intended..

Yes, in some applications it would work just fine, especially if you are careful with it, but then other times it would be like Fats Domino, "Walking to New Orleans."

Thanks. This one was made with a point but I have seen those screw on points you mentioned. So I take it that the puller is still quite usable but without the point its applications are limited. Is that correct?

The point is to locate into a drilled center on the shaft. You might get away without the centering point for light duty pulling. If you have to crank on it the screw will walk without a locating center.

I wouldnt be scared to use it, Its important to keep it square on what your trying to pull regardless if the Point is still there or not.

My pullers either have a floating point or insert to allow the screw to float.

You can either have a new point machined onto the end of the screw, or, put a small ball bearing between the shaft and the end of the screw to concentrate the force, and prevent mushrooming the end.

It was probably ruined by machinery made without a centering point for pullers...something anything that needs a puller for service really should have.
I would cut a new point, and keep a centerpunch with the puller set...a decently eye-balled centerpunch mark should be plenty close to do a pulling job.

If you don't have access to a machine shop or your own lathe, you can eyeball a new point into teh screw by chucking it into a drill press at lowest speed and carefully grinding a point into the tip.
