Question about head bolt

I know there is a special tool designed for head bolts. Why can't i just get the correct extension and socket needed for that application rather then buying the specialty tool that has the socket and extension as on piece. I just never seen the purpose of it. Im about to buy the tool but not sure if i should or not. Thanks.

Im using it on a toyota, which it calls for a 14mm 12 point. So im wondering why would the tool be any better vs using a 14mm 12 point socket and a extension of your choice. Since most headbolt sockets are normally about 4" in total length.

depends on the application there are hundreds of different vehicle specific head bolt sockets. Some of them just make the job easier/faster and some of them you have to have. It just depends give the application and im sure somebody here can shed light if there is another "cheaper" option.

the tool is mainly better for torqueing the head bolts down. Because the tool has less deflection and doesn't need a formula to calculate the torque difference you will have with using an extension.

you can use a regular socket for the just use a real thick 1/2 extention as short as possible for torquing up new bolts.

unless you're working on a space shuttle and all its just the difference between a socket and extension and a socket permanently mated to an extension...use the former. Some special tools serve a purpose, others not so much. Keep in mind Toyota uses a unique head bolt so that could be cause for them to create a special tool as well. Now a days you can just buy the socket.

i believe you need to rethink that statement....

changing the verticle length of a socket doesnt change the torque spec.

changing the center of rotation horizontally does....

If it's anything like a Honda 14mm 12 point head bolt, it takes a real thin socket; thinner than what you get with a 1/2'' drive. Watched my neighbor snap a 3/8'' drive socket because he couldn't fit a 1/2'' drive on there.
