Question about Home depot warranty

Two weeks ago i picked up a Ryobi 18v one plus combo from home depot. The kit included a drill, impact driver and circular saw, along with two free bare tools. So naturally I picked up the reciprocating saw and the 4 1/2 inch p423 grinder. Well long story short, the grinder gave out a few days ago while using a flap disc prepping metal for tig welding practice. I did use it to cut about 120 inches of 12 gauge sheet a few days prior and it worked great.I still have the reciept, but the box is long gone. Also the cut off wheel and and grinding disc it came with have been heavily used. Should I just take the grinder itself to the store with me??? Never dealt with any returns from home depot before.

I'd take everything it came with all together to the store and ask. Be prepared to stand around a while, but when they finally find someone in the right department to help, I would expect them to take it back, or even exchange it, since you're within the return period.

I would take everything back to HD for an exchange but...like someone above said the wait will take some time and (always an and) every person you talk too will be somewhat taken back; I think it must do with the low pay and heavy turnover of staff so be patient with them.

OP could you tell us more about the the grinder model, what happened to it, how many hours did it last, etc. I myself would like to avoid that model if indeed it was defective or at the very least see if it had any recalls on it.

You're overthinking it. It's well within the return / exchange policy. Take in your receipt and the products. Explain the situation with the tool in question and they should do what's called an RTV - Even Exchange. Basically they'll scan your receipt and then scan the barcode of the tool in question and voila...done. Doesn't matter that you don't have the original box, the unit they pull off the shelf will suffice for them to scan the UPC.

Exactly. RTV in this case means "Return to Vendor", as opposed to putting the tool back on the shelf for sale. You could do an exchange or if you're not happy with the grinder, just return it.

The only difficulty is the lack of the box. It means that customer service will call over someone who works the tool aisle to figure out the sku of the tool you brought in, and that's going to take some time to find someone available.

As for performance before it died, it was pretty good as long as you used the higher amp hr batteries. It had no trouble cutting through 120 inches of 12 gauge steel. As expected it will eat through batteries while cutting, but i picked up a 2 pack of 9 amp hr batteries as well. I was surprised that it died while using a flap disc to remove mill scale. Hopefully i just got bad. Guess I will find out tomorrow morning how Home Depots customer service is.

If they fawk w you you just go buy another. Fresh receipt and box have now magically materialized.

Throw bad unit in new box and return w new receipt. Done

I'm not suggesting anything immoral or illegal -- sometimes life is too short to argue w ignorant employees, and even if you set that employee straight it won't matter 'cause they'll be gone in 2 weeks

But hopefully they will honor their policies as written.

Basically you can return ANYTHING within 90 days with receipt -- that's THEIR policy

Also don't try the word "exchange." Home Depot has never heard this word.

In their system it'll basically be a return and rebuy, but in case the promo has ended do EXPLAIN what your end goal is here.

I am the receiving department Head of a large volume Home depot

All you need to do is go in with your receipt and the tool.
Tell them you wish to rtv even exchange the tool.

If you wish to make it quicker at the returns desk offer to walk to the shelf and get the replacement. As long as you are with in the 90 day return window or 1 year return window if purchased on your home depot card they will exchange it.

If you have an issue ask for the manager on duty. if they give you any problem take your phone call 1 (800) 466-3337 the customer care and explain to them that you have your receipt and are trying to exchange your tool you just purchased less than 90 days ago and the manager is refusing. you will get your tool exchanged a call to care destroys a stores numbers unless they can fix the issue for the customer

Walk in with the receipt or the card you purchased it with. Your item should just be exchanged, or “returned and rebought”. If the grinder was the bare tool - you should be able to return and rebuy another bare tool. If it was part of a kit that came with say 3 other tools (in one box) then you would likely need to bring everything in and exchange it all.

Absolute worst case - like what was already stated - just buy another one at full price of the bare tool, and return the broken one a week later with the new box and a new receipt. I highly doubt you will need to resort to this. Your purchase is covered under the stores return policy. After the 30 days or 90 days (i cant remember what the window is), you would technically need to deal with the warranty of the manufacturer - but you could always just avoid all that by doing the above. You have nothing to worry about.

Well the grinder went back to Home Depot today. The process was hassle free and took less than 5 minutes. They told me to go grab another one to replace it with and that was it. No long wait in line or anything. Hoping this one proves to be more reliable.

This has been my experience with anything HD related. No BS. No hassle. They can even locate the purchase via their system if you use a debit/credit card.

I have probably returned/exchanged about 30 different items/trips.

Failing to see how any 'opinions' on a forum (would supersede Homedepot policies and it makes no difference).

I bought a Ryobi 18 volt electric drain snake. Right on top of box, "Cannot be returned". I asked sales person if when I opened the box and it was broken or would not run would they take an exchange . He replied, "Yes, that notice is for someone who buys it, cleans their drains and then tries to return it with **** all over it and try to get their money back", I used it and of course kept it ready for the next the drains clog with hair.

Actually, you don't even need a receipt for most even exchanges. Whatever tool I brought in, it was hardly used but defective. They told me to grab a new one, and I got a receipt saying warranty exchange. As long as they get back everything to send back as a whole, you should be fine. As in, they should be sending a complete tool & accessories back, so if you are missing a handle, they would hold on to the new one.

I think only a few customer service reps know how to do it correctly though, so I would bring your receipt & just explain the situation. Worst case is, they are clueless & you just go buy a new one, and walk right back in with the new box & defective tool.

It is amazing the customer service reps don't comprehend what the customer is trying to do. That is the whole point of the job up there.
