Question about layout

I just recently purchased a house and am going from an oversized 3 car down to a tiny 2 car. The problem is that I need to fit my 3/4 ton ram in the garage and am looking for ideas about maximizing space. I am assuming that i will not be able to put anything in front of the truck to get it all the way in the garage but still need to store my wife's car and push lawnmower inside. I would still like a small workbench that I will probably build but am not sure which direction to take. I haven't measured it but I believe the dimensions are your standard 19x20. My toolbox is a simple double stack craftsman and a 40" snap on roll cabinet. Any ideas?

Our attached 2 car is 21x22.5 and my F150 Super Crew barely fits. I park on the left side, fold in the driver's mirror, skim the door trim with the mirror and have just enough room to squeeze past a narrow shelf and around the nose. Or around the tail if the door is open. I also remove the trailer hitch ball. The Dart fits on the other side and there is room to open the doors. There would be room in front of that car for a tool box. 3/4 Dodge? Tough squeeze on that one I think.

your only option is to leave your truck outside.

I have a standard garage (19x20), my 2005 crew cab short box Chevy 2500 will fit with about 1 inch to spare. But getting the other car in would be a tight fit. Because of this, my truck sits out, the car goes in, and I have room for a small work area.

Ok, so say that I do leave the truck outside, how about layout of the work bench and tool layout? Anyone else with a standard garage, how did you maximize your space?

You can "dream up" how you might layout garage just using grid paper (drawn to scale) and shapes for your various objects (ie toolbox, vehicle, air compressor, etc). Keep changing things around until you like how it might work. Some guys also put masking tape down on floor in garage to "get feel" whether the idea is functional or not.

For computerized version of this, lots of GJer's have used Sketch-Up software which has a free version. Good luck.
