So we are getting ready to do a kitchen remodel next month. My dishwasher currently drains into a standpipe with a p-trap that goes into the main drain. The sink and disposal has its own drain and p-trap which also ties into the main drain. Not sure why it’s setup like that. We are getting new appliances delivered tomorrow. Whoever did this original job has the dishwasher drain hose going into that stand pipe. They must have installed that first then did the countertop. What’s great about that is, there’s not enough clearance between the top of the standpipe and the countertop to be able to get the drain hose out. The disposal has a dishwasher knockout on it. I think I’ll just use that tomorrow for hooking up the new dishwasher. My question is, when we redo the cabinets and new countertops, can I cut that standpipe down and just put a cap over it, effectively eliminating it? There is an air admittance valve attached to the main drain under the sink. Not sure if the standpipe would also assist with air pressure when the water is running. I attached some pics. The standpipe is the one with the blue writing printed on it.
