Hold the lower part that is the shell with the grooves. Put the drill in to reverse and bump the trigger. It should break the friction lock on the chuck jaws. If that doesn't work, continue to hold the chuck shell or place it into a vise with soft jaws. Cycle between forward and reverse and it should release the jaws. If that still fails, use a rawhide mallet to smack the chuck shell a few times going around the circumference - then repeat the above steps.

Here’s the Manual from that or another Milwaukee drill that used that chuck design.

If I recall correctly, from searching thru Milwaukee parts lists, that chuck wasn’t really offered on drills for all that long.
I forget whether it came before or after the plastic double sleeve Jacobs chucks.
Milwaukee later quickly upgraded to the all steel double sleeve Yukiwa Seiko chucks with the black lacquered finish that they continued using for at least a decade or more.

Thanks guys. Works great!

I didn't think to look for a manual for this drill. That was a great idea neophyte.

It looks like I was mistaken about how long these drill chucks were offered for.
Milwaukee parts lists for the 0235-1 seem to show this or a similar drill chick being used from 1987 thru at least 1996, although there might be variations.
By 2001 the 0235-1 drill models had switched to a different keyless chuck type.

That's the best keyless chuck I've ever seen on a drill. If I'm not mistaken Milwaukee got them from Japan. I use a Magnum Hole Shooter for power tapping and that chuck holds the tap better than any other chuck I've ever used.

So it’s probably also a Yukiwa Seiko drill chuck.
