Question about pouring a stepped footer

We are finally digging the footer for the new garage in the morning. Because of grade we need to pour a stepped footer. I know the local requirements for the footer dimensions, 24" deep, 24" wide and 8" thick. What I need to know is how much overlap is required between the upper and lower step. The step will be 8".

How much should the upper level extend over the bottom level?

Thanks,

If I understand you question correctly,
I don't believe they let you step the footing.
It is a max depth all around and you step the wall.

Thanks Brownbagg.

It is my understanding that stepping the footer is common practice when the grade drastically changes over the distance of the footer.

His200Herscout,

I noticed they used 12" block for the first couple courses, then 8" above ground on yours, I see that alot, is that manditory or just a good idea?

thanks,

by the way, nice International pick-up.

Mine is stepped, and approved by the local building inspector. First inspected the hole or trench and rebar before pouring.

I have the same requirement for inspection.

Any ideas on how to combine a stepped footer using the trench form method?

Just put a 2xX across the trench where the end of the overlap is. Dig a slot on both sides of the trench and drive in some stakes on both sides of the 2x to hold it upright.

These aren't the greatest photos, but I had to step my footer also. One side it was stepped 16" (2 courses) and the other 24" (3 courses) and one 8" step in the front

Thanks Flameout, That is exactly what I have going on, thanks for the visual. Nice bridge, what did you use?

Also, I am only about 2 hours south of you in Clarksburg, WV, we probably have similar grades.

Here are a few shots showing how I handle stepper footers. I always make the overlap the same or greater than the WIDTH of the footer.

I had two of these on one 30' run. Both creating a 16" change, to make 2 courses of block work.

I guess that is why the people in Wisconsin call us down here "flatlanders."
I have never seen that done.
Thanks for the education.
