question about used snap on tools

I have a chance to purchase some used snap on stuff, was all bought within the last 20 years. THe guy wants 30% of retail, he said the snap on guy told him that he should be able to get that no problem. Is that a good price or good rule of thumb ? I realize certain things may bring a little more or less, I was trying to buy complete standard and metric socket sets 1/4 3/8 1/2 . I never looked at the prices that way so what or where should it be to be reasonable?

IMHO 30% of retail, (not off retail), is doing very good. But this assumes the majority of the tools are wrenches, ratchets, sockets, etc in good condition.

If there's a bunch of specialty stuff then it can be a tougher sell.

we are talking 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 sockets shallow , deep, and impact , and all the basic ratchets, long, short , flex, the total came to 2200.00 he is basing it off of the snap on website. I am not looking to resell the stuff just looking to use it. But its nice to buy stuff and no you wouldnt lose your a%% on it.

Just simply wrong. That's like saying you should pay full Blue Book price for a used car that has been sideswiped and needs $5,000 of body work. Since you're just going to drive it and not resell it, and the scrapes all the way down one side don't really bother you, it doesn't effect the price, right????

It's a question of what is a fair price to pay. If they are engraved, I'd say one should pay 25-35% less.

I don't buy used lots because I don't have the time to clean and sort them. I have a truck full of new stuff to sell

If some do have his engraving I.D. then I would reccomend a signed staement/receipt of them. You never know!

I would call that a good deal if the tools are not engraved and not abused. If he's the kind of guy that would beat on a wrench with a hammer to break something loose, I wouldn't want his tools.

On any given one piece, 30% of retail is a very good deal.

When I'm asked to take an entire lot of tools for multiple thousand dollars, the price has to be less. If they are all Snap-on, all mint, then maybe $2000. If the guy is a tech and has been using some of them professionally for twenty years, then maybe much less.

If there are a lot of dings and box wear, don't buy "they have a lifetime guarantee." If it's that easy to swap for new, why hasn't the tech made the exchanges? Since you weren't his customer, the truckie isn't going to be too quick to swap worn-but-serviceable for new, and IMHO, you shouldn't ask him to do so.

Packard's right. For a lot that size, I'd offer him cash 20% You're saving him the time and effort of selling them all individually. How many guys are there really with $1000-1500 cash to plunk down in front of you?

In my book, 30% of retail is pretty close to "Used Retail", unless the stuff is virtually unused. A dealer would need to buy at "Used Wholesale" to make it worthwhile to resell. Average "Used Wholesale" would probably be closer to 20% of list price....but a lot depends on condition. And as Chadster points out, new dealers usually only carry used items as a favor to a customer...ie customer buys a Modis, and 6 months later trades for a Verus. That used Modis will end up on the driver's truck. Buyt in general, carrying used goods will erode the potential to sell the new stuff.

I buy used tool collections on a regular basis, and my intent is to resell. I usually pay much less than 30%. But often that includes air tools, tool boxes and diagnostic tools that have lower resale than hard line tools. But I can also pass on several dozen nice tool collections to find just the right motivated seller with the right price. And since I'm not buying tools to use, I don't really care what the exacty content of the collection is...as long as it's mostly good quality truck-brand stuff.

Are you suggesting that he might have stolen them and then put his ID on them prior to reselling them? If they have his ID on them I wouldn't worry, if the all had someone elses ID, that might be of concern.
