...I have an American Scale vise like the vise below. The jaws appear to be secured with a type of dado joint. Are they replaceable? If so, how are they removed?

if it was me i don't think i'd want to change those jaws. smooth jaws can work fine. if you need a little more grip buy a pair of Wilton copper jaw covers that are 6 inches and maybe $35 on Ebay shipped to your house.

or if you want more advice you'll need to take more pictures of the jaws so we can see the screw heads and the sides better. open up the vise to get pictures of the jaw faces and as close as possible.

by the way another reason i wouldn't change out those jaws is because that isn't a vise you see everyday and it looks pretty clean on the top now.

good luck

That's not my vise, mine is hammered but still functional. I will take photos in the morning.

I went out to take photos and pulled the dynamic jaw off, I hit the jaws with a wire wheel and I don't see screws or pins. There is a good 3/8" of slop between the screw and the dynamic jaw and the threads in the body are extremely worn.

The jaws log up close to square so I think I will leave this one alone and use it as is and continue the search for a medium to large vise in better condition.
