So I've purchased a KEV Sliblette 6NE which is a 220V bench grinder with a grinder disc and a belt sander. This should be a semi-professional grinder with a new price in the area of $580.

My question is regarding the sanding belt.

I've no experience with these type of machines but I would think that the belt should not be loose. By pressing the upper lever I can tension the belt and it starts running. However if I let go of the lever the tension is released again and the drive wheel will not pick-up the belt so it stops running.

The tensioner works with an eccentrically placed roller. I took it apart and nothing seems missing. The spring seems to be mounted right but I'd think that the spring force should be in the opposite direction. By pressing the lever I should be able to remove the tension so I can take off the belt. When I release the lever the spring tension should be tensioning the belt. Am I overlooking things? WTF is going on here?

I rather have two hands available to sand things instead of needing one hand to put tension on the belt constantly.

Does anybody have identical grinders and what are your experiences?

You have the right idea. The tension should maintain 35-40 lbs. The lever releases the tension for belt changes. Try to reverse the cam

I agree, it sounds like some thing is back wards, Can you look up a manual online to see what is wrong?

I've looked but only found replacement part lists not a manual.

I've tried if it was possible to 'flip it over' by rotating it without the belt on but that didn't work perhaps I need to have a look again because I agree that it should be something like a reversed cam.

Thanks guys. The inner axle had rotated to the outer axle where the spring force is applied. There were quite some heavy scratch marks on the inner axle. I've cleaned the surface of the inner axle and adjusted the position. Now it works like a charm again. Guess that's the reason he sold it and for a fair price.

I'm very happy.
