I am looking to get a new miter saw and really like the looks of the Dewalt slider miter saws. I would like to get a 10", mostly for the smaller size and lighter weight. What I can't figure out is why the DW717 (10" saw) is a little over $500 in most places, and the DWS779 (12") can be had for $399. From what I can tell, they are both dual bevel, sliding compound miter saws. Am I missing something?

Cobbler most likely has it right.. I don't know anyone with the 10 inch and know a good dozen people including myself with the 12.. Its pretty much the norm for framers around here. Add the XPS to the Dewalt (DWS780) and your price will jump up.
