I live in RI and want to ride longer into the fall/winter. I normally wear baggy riding shorts but what do you guys and girls wear for pants in colder weather? Spandex isnt an option lol

I picked up a pair of pants from REI. They're windproof, but breathable and have some stretch to them also. You can layer up under them too. Stick with polyester/wool blends, otherwise you'll freeze when you get wet. I think they were about 80 bucks. The bike specific stuff does work well though too.

When the temp start to get cold, under 40 I wear a pair of these

with a pair of baggy knickers over the top. As ridiculous as they look they are very warm and comffy.

When its full on winter and staying below freezing I wear a pair of Dickies waterproof breathable insulated bibs. Unfortunately they no longer make them. I would say they are similar to a snow board pant.

In both cases having the "bib" pannel that covers your plumbers crack makes a world of difference in keeping you warm and comfortable when on the bike.

And last but not least, its not about what you wear, but what you ride.;)

I agree w/ 9G9. Not about riding a racked out ridgid, but in regards to apparel. ;)

In the last few years, I have taken off my egg beater pedals in favor of flats in the winter, wear a mtn bike shoe that is 1/2 size larger and wear Smart Wool socks (light to medium, but not heavy weight-too warm) and GoreTex Seal Skins to keep my feet dry.

Full finger gloves of course, and a silk weight balaclava under the helmet.

I have long climbs up Galbraith Mtn that bring the sweat, so I also bring a 2nd synthetic skin layer in my pack to change into, otherwise I'll freeze in the wet shirt.

At lower elevations, we can get cold hard rains, so I bring a complete 2nd set of clothing, from skin layer to outer shell, in a plastic bag inside my pack. After 60 minutes I'm drenched and can't take it anymore, so I change underneath the relative shelter of a tree and new found dryness and warmth gives you a big adrenaline boost and I'm good for another 60 minutes before getting home to the hot tub.

I don't like too baggy because it catches on everything as you go by (narrow trails) but basically sweat pants (cheap ones, since they will get trashed!)

WHen you say sweat pants, it makes me think of cotton sweat pants, and surely you don't ride in cotton.

Do you mean nylon/synthetic running pants?

Your legs shouldn't get too cold if you are pumping the pedals good. When i was in norfolk, VA i would wear a pair of windbreaker running pants and long-johns under that. Worked great...

This, and just a normal pair of tights over top your regular riding shorts should do you fine in temps down to about freezing. The tights will be a little cool for the first few minutes in to the ride until you warm up. The tights as minimal as tehy are work because they provide some wind cutting but mostly keet the sweat off your legs in the cool air.
