Question for Electric motor gurus

Bought a rockwell drill press with motor issue. The motor sat for 5-10 years without being used. I blew out the motor with an air hose before turning it on.

Dayton 1HP 240V that makes a lot of noise and throws the breaker after about 5 seconds of running. Loud rattling/humming noise while it runs. After it throws the breaker the shaft spins for quite a while, so I don't think it is bearings.

There are no lubrication ports.

I know this is sketchy, but any advise/ideas will be appreciated.

My electrical ability is limited.

Start switch is probably stuck. It's on the shaft inside the motor. Do you hear a "click" as the motor coasts to a stop?

When the start switch stays closed it keeps the start winding, and capacitor if equipped, in circuit. This will make the motor draw much more current then normal and it tends to be noisy also.

Turned it on 4 times and every time I heard the click just about the time the shaft was nearly stopped.

I did find a youtube video of the same problem and it sounds Identical to mine.

Is there a simple way to fix this or should I take it to an electrical shop.

AND THANKS FOR THE HELP.

Dependents on how adventurous are you in electrical motors.... as in opening it up and check... Might be tricky to put it back... not hard.

usually this is what I would do..

turn the shaft by hand and see if it rotates freely...easily..
add some lube to the shaft let it seep in.

Check if the capacitor is good ? Unless you have some funky "other" motors that is not the standard AC induction motor...

If you are adventurous Open it up and check the centrifugal switch contacts for pits burns stuck? There is few good video of that from JET drill press or Delta guys... doesn't matter still same thing, probably a bit variant.... search here or youtube...
