I have a question for those of you that have liftmaster 8500's. After you set the open travel limit of the opener will the arrows on the remote allow you to open past that? The reason I ask is I'm laying out lighting for a new shop with a 11' high door that won't arrive for a couple of months and it would make it much easier for placing lights if I could set the opener to open the door to say 8' normally but then be able to override it to open more on the rare occasions something taller needs to come in.

No. When you are setting it up, you are programming the maximum open position. However, if your concern is that the open door will be shading lights that would be above the fully open door, you can simply stop the door at whatever height you want when it is opening. There are no ”arrows” on the remote. When you program it, you are using arrow buttons on the opener itself.
