Question for the door opener experts.

I'd like to buy and install the Liftmaster 3800 jackshaft opener on my new doors. The instruction manual says not to use this opener if the drums are bigger than 6" and tapered. On one of my doors (the high lift one) the drums do not meet this restriction. The diameter is 7.5" for the first full turn of the drum then it's straight across, no taper with a diameter of just over 6.5" for the remainder of the turns. What's the reason for this restriction and will mine not work properly because of it?

Also, is the remote frequency compatible with craftsmen openers. I seem to recall Liftmaster makes the craftsmen.

Kapt, I'm doing the research on the same task as you. I think you should just change out the drums to 4" and be done. Al W.

The opener has a counter inside that measures the #'s of turns as it is going up and down. Somehow it will not work properly with a drim larger than 6" in diameter. Ask me how I know I found out the hard way once. It will not hold it's limits and really acts strange. A Zap will work with any diameter drum and is only a little more expensive and much quieter.

In regards to changing the drums you really can't just change them to smaller without changing the springs. I am sure there are some that have done it but it is not "right".

I've heard/read (second/thirdhand) a number of horror stories about the reliability of the iDrive's motor and WD's quality control, in general.

I just finished the installation of the 3800C. I am very satisfied with the results. Accurate stops, cool features and quiet. Now we'll see about longevity and required maintenance. So far I give it a 9 out of 10. Al W.
