Question for the Ford Techs

This refers to a 99 Triton V8 in an Expedition.

When the initial 100K plug change is made by dealer service is it standard that plugs "and" coils are replaced or just plugs.

Asking because I'm at 160K now and have had a couple of random coils fail and I'm thinking about having them all replaced and will certainly do so if some...were not replaced at the 100K.

Hope that made sense...

Thanks

Just Plugs and Coil Boots- those are the rubber part and spring parts of the coils available at any part store, no need to replace coils unless they are failing or you have a misfire.

I think just go with plus and boots as well. The replacement coils are just as likely to fail as the existing ones even more so if you replace with some aftermarket coils. Just replace the coils as needed.

Ok that's what I wanted to know..only the plugs and boots at 100K. I've had 2 coils go out (with the misfire) and now I have another.

Thanks...

I would only replace the coil with a Motorcraft coil only, the only aftermarket coil I have had last was Visteon the OE maker of the original coils and those are no longer available. SMP makes the Motorcraft coil but their line of coils is not the same and do not last in these. BTDT have had the comebacks to prove it:(

Thanks.....I normally just have the dealer do it so I'm sure they would use the Motorcraft.

One small piece of advice - if you live in an area that gets a lot of humidity, check the coils for any cracking around the permitter. If you see cracks that go all the way through the plastic, replace the coil even if it works.

not doing so can actually do additional harm to the plugs due to lack of full load power to the plug. We battled this issue at my old Ford dealer for months before it was figured out.

Plus you have to be careful when removing the spark plugs out of the 2 valve triton engines. They will not come out easy sometimes pulling the threads out of the cylinder head. This is a problem with these engines too.
