Question for the Infinity Techs

Tool related yes no maybe...But my daughter has a 2000 Infinity G20 and she told me today that the battery and brake light on the dash are on.

I guess my question would be does the fact that they came on together indicate a problem other than if either came on alone?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That most likely means her alternator is starting to give out. For some reason nissan likes to have their cars do that. I would check the alternator output.

Just because both came on does not mean they are related. Brake light came on if hand brake is on, brake fluid level is low, or leak in brake fluid, which is independence of battery condition. If you are talking about stop light not brake light, the stop light (on the dash) should also not dependent on battery condition.

Thanks for the replies....it's funny how further questioning a 17 year daughter about what was going on when the lights came on will always yield more information.....I asked her to tell me more so she says....oh yea...there was some scraping noise and the air conditioner went out....

So a 2000 G20 does "not" have a separate belt for AC and alternator does it?

It's off to the stealership service center tomorrow I guess.

The 2000 G20 has both the AC and alternator driven by a single belt. Again they are independent of each other. If one fail, the other will not necessary fail. Of course, if the belt break, both will not function. If the belt break and if the battery is in good condition, the car will probably run for about 30 minutes (depending on battery capacity) before the car stop running. You may want to do a quick check on the belt before going to the dealer. You don't want to get stranded.

Is there a separate belt from the crankshaft to the power steering? It seems like I saw that in an engine diagram online but not sure. If so, and if she lost the other belt that would explain the noise she heard and explain why she still has power steering but no AC or charging system.

Thanks

yes power steering is on the back side of the engine the belt also drives the water pump. ac, and alt are on the other belt

Ok that's good to know that I can still drive it to the service center without it over- heating because it sounds like she lost the other belt.

Thanks.

if the belt is missing or loose I wouldn't risk it its a very easy job to replace or adjust it

If the belt break, I would not risk driving it to the dealer especially not knowing the condition/charge of the battery. It is not too difficult to replace the belt.

look at the charging system, Alternator, Belt etc. on japo cars when the battery and brake light come on at the same time it's not charging

FYI it's Infiniti with a i not a y.

for the battery light check the voltage at the battery with the car running it should be over 13v if less then a safe bet is the alternator is bad.

for the brake light check the fluid level it's likely low.

generally its the abs light and battery light on most nissan and infiniti vehichles. Go have the alternator load tested or either do it your self with dvom, pull back the protective cover, covering the alt cable post. and check for output voltage normally about14.5 or so. But if im not mistaken the alt and a/c are driven off the same belt, If so look for the cause of the belt breakage.. i.e. locked up alt or a/c clutch. good luck,

Pretty awesome offer Dave. I'm in North Richland Hills between Keller and Southlake.

I don't really want to impose on you for that and in fact I've been wanting to take her car in for a once over since I got it for her so I think it's going to the shop today.

I'd do all this **** myself if it wasn't for this pesky wheelchair. Even with the wheelchair I wrenched everything possible on my old Chev. Z-28 and Suburban because they were easy to work on. I even built 2 separate engines for the Camaro. But these cars pffffft...no way.

I will check it further this morning before its driven before deciding that it's ok to drive or not. Towing is not out of the question.
