Question: Jointer Drive Pulley Size

I just picked up a small, '50s era 4" Craftsman jointer, no motor or stand. The driven v-belt pulley on the cutter head is 1 3/4". Could anyone tell me the correct size or size range for the drive pulley at the motor shaft?

My guess would be 2". But if you post the model number, we may be able to find the manual over at Vintagemachinery to confirm. You'll also need to figure out what rpm the motor should be.

From the instructions for a Craftsman model 103.23340 4" Jointer:

It appears 5" may be the answer.

The calculations equate to a 2.25" drive pulley, but I would suggest getting newer larger pulleys on the order of 4" drive/3" driven using a 3450 rpm motor. The rationale being that you can transmit much more power using the larger diameter pulleys. Those small OD pulleys are noisy and hard on V-belts as well.

Thanks, everyone-that gets me where I need to go. I have a 3450 Craftsman motor from a table saw "parts machine" that was purchased by a friend. I'll do the math from here.

Using a pulley calculator with the specs from the owner's manual and Tom's 1.75" pulley would give 5000 rpm:
(5 / 1.75) * 1750 = 5000 rpm

My 4" jointer (103.21820) has a 2" pulley, I use a 3450 rpm, 1/2 hp motor with a 2.5" pulley:
(2.5 / 2) * 3450 = 4312 rpm
