I am currently restoring a Sears craftsman 9 inch drill press from 2004. I have it all disassembled but I cannot get the pulley off. It is attached with a nut and I cannot figure out how to keep the pulley from turning while trying to remove the nut. How do you keep the pulley locked into place without damaging it?
Thank you:headscrat

Occupantrj has it - an impact wrench )with a strap wrench on the stepped pulley) should do the trick.
("Should" being the weasel word).

I will give it a try, but first I need to buy a strap wrench! Always looking for an excuse to buy more tools:)

Can probably just hold the pulley with your hand, especially with a battery impact. Wear a leather glove if you're worried. Once the nut is off, the pulley and spindle are probably tapered, with a light press fit.

^ Thats what I'd do, but it also looks like the shaft has a hex broach at the top, you you could use a pass thru socket, or turn one with a pipe wrench while counterholding the shaft by allen wrench.

With the belt installed and a normal operating tightness, take a clamp in between the two pulleys and clamp the two sides of the belt towards each other. It will greatly increase the friction between the belt and the pulley and should hold better than a strip wrench would hold it. Then use your impact gun.

Take an old belt (even from your car)
Wrap around the pully and then vise grips to fab the belt such that it grabs on the pully
Hold the belt and hit the nut with the impact
