hello all, I have a question on garage door rough opening, Should the rough opening be the same width as the width of the door or a little narrower? If it should be narrower then by how much? My existing doors were installed by someone else and are out of wack. They do not seal good for starters and some of the hardware is not installed properly. I want to correct everything before I finish my front with with sheathing. Thanks in advance.

Imo the door and finished opening are usually made to be the exact same size, however the door can be taller than the opening by 1 inch or less.

The sealing gaskets are what make up the difference.

The rough opening is the exact same size as the door. The door actually sits behind the opening. Once the door is installed, 1x6 or 1x8 trim boards are installed (top one first, then both sides). The door seals then get screwed into the trim boards for a tight seal against the door.

I have more questions than answers.
You can do it anyway you want. For your climate I prefer to have the finished opening excluding W/S for width 1" under and height 1/2" under. Doors openings done this way have less air infiltration while only losing a small amount of opening size. Warmer climates can get away with doing it other ways.

This way you don't use the W/S as a stop and you won't see the glow of light thru the W/S if your jambs aren't plumb.

If you need every inch of opening size get a door 2" wider.

1 x finish trim will create the seal edge for the door.
