Question on Grease Zerk

I want to replace the original grease zerks (fittings) on my Scag blade spindles with some 45 degree ones.

In the owners manual it refers to them as "Scag Grease Fitting 1/4-28 Self-Tap".

Among the many replacements available I see mostly the straight or tapered listed........Is it the tapered I need?

Should be able to pull it out and see if it's straight or tapered

just go to auto part house and buy a box of associted fitting and go to town, about eight bucks

I suspect "self tap" is tapered, but this is the internet & you get what you paid for this post! LOL

The main thing is you don't want it to fall out. The first-tap has already been done but that interference fit is most likely to keep it in place. So you will not experience the benefit of that unless you drive it tighter. But this is where I would pull out the red loctite. Don't go crazy just a light coat.

Ayuh,..... 1/4"- 28 is the standard thread for small grease fittin's,.....

As brownbag says, just go buy a box of universal fittin's, 'n use which ever ones ya want,.....

You should beable to buy a 90* grease coupler for your fun too.

You can either (in the order I'd prefer).
1. trust the threads made by the original self tapper (may not be quite deep enough).
2. retap the threads.
3. use another self tapper

No matter what use a zerk with 1/4-28 threads and it should work fine.

Look up the "LocknLube grease gun coupler. It is expensive, but I'll never have a grease gun without one. Locks on the fitting, NO leaks.

You can get them in the US now, but when I bought my first one, I had to order it from South Africa. The freight was as much as the coupler.
