I have had a slew of decent punches. Kayhew, craftsman, a few snap on, and the like. They all mushroom or bend at some point, so whats the point of buying good punches?

Once you've swung enough hammers on stuck pins, you quickly realize there is a difference in quality, even the high quality punches will wear and occasionally need warranty service. How long in between those service intervals is what I dictates quality IMO.. A lot of today's punches utilize a parabolic head which slows the mushrooming down.. I suspect the majority of today's punch failures are because the improper size or type of punch was used. I know I'm guilty... My punch damage was greatly reduced after I started using starter punches to get things moving, unfortunately.. Pin punches due to there nature are prone to being bent.

I have found this to also be the case. I found that after buying a basic set of snap on punches, I was able to get (stuck) bearing races out of hubs easier without having to run to the bench grinder every few minutes to re-edge the end of the punch. I started with the big set of craftsman punches, which I really wouldnt complain about, they were definitely usable. It was just a noticable difference in quality of metals. As far as roll pin punches and stuff, they will all bend. Roll pins are my least favorite to drive out generally.
