Question SK Or Craftsman?

Im looking for a Gift for my Brother and I know his tools are a bunch of mismatched stuff.

Im thinking about getting him a couple General Service Socket sets and im torn between SK and a Craftsman Set. Im looking at these sets at tooltopia.

http://www.tooltopia.com/sk-hand-tool-94549.aspx

http://www.tooltopia.com/sk-hand-tool-91848.aspx

Or one of the Craftsman 200-250 Pc sets

Im guessing the SK will have a better finish but the craftsman will be easier to warranty if the need ever arrises.

Thoughts?

Well, I'm very happy with every SK product I own. I can't remember the last time I broke a socket, and those ratchets are very strong so the warranty may not be that big of an issue.

Im leaning towards SK for these exact reasons, Tooltopia has some crazy deals and im worried about the New craftsman stuff as there has been some Members who have had chrome issues.

i maybe biased but those sk sets are hard to beat. nice cases, nice finish, everything you really need yet no fluff. a nice bonus of those cases is the cover can be removed and laid in a drawer. most of those kits from cman give you 6 and 12 pt wich you really don't need plus a bunch of other semi useless junk to get the number up. to top it off most of the cman cases are garbage. i think sk is actualy a better value at the prices you linked.

Both those SK sets are available from Advance Auto Parts:

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product__22989559-P_N3409A_T|GRP2062____

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product__22989567-P_N3409A_T|GRP2062____

I added them to my cart to check and they are available to ship. Using Advance's discount codes, you should be able to get them cheaper than even Tooltopia.

For example, the "VISA" code will get you $50 off orders over $150. You'll also get free shipping, but you'll have to pay sales tax.

I ordered my recently purchased SK wrench set from Advance. It was a good transaction. Well packaged and shipped fast.

If you dont like the topic Move on.

agreed, you asked a legitimate question and didn't try to stir the pot. don't know as if i have ever seen you do any stiririn to speak of. another thing to think of is ideal is trying to bring sk back and establish themselves as a us made tool company. something sears and cman seem to be running from. just food for thought.:)

I wonder if i can double up on the "Coupon codes" by creating 2 seperate orders over $150?

I'm sure you probably can.

I don't think there is a better discount code available right now for that size order than the VISA code, but you might want to do some googling to find out.

EDIT- I see you already placed an order. Make sure to post some pics when it arrives!

I know Jori from Harry Epstein already posted some pics of the new sets, and they looked excellent.

Sweet, before you give it away take some good pics and post up, I don't think we've seen the new SK really up close.

So then are these sets from the entity that I hear brought SK back from the dead? I was so pissed when I found out SK had gone out of business and thought the Lifetime Warranty period was all over.

And my experience with both brands: I've broken a tons of Craftsman stuff and hardly any SK. Biggest downside was the 6 month wait to warranty an SK ratcheting wrench.

I think you made a good choice Hiball, I myself have 0 experience with the new s-k but if it is anything like the old production it wont disappoint. I think that sk ratchets are kinda hokey but ******** they are pretty rugged I have a few Ive beat on for years and they havent had to be warranted which is much more than I can say for the craftsman line.

Appreciated this thread for the discount code.
Thanks.

If you want the 1/2" set, use the 20% off code because the 1/2" set is around $330, so you'd get $66 off vs. $50 off with the VISA code.

With tax though, the Tooltopia price of $270 is right about the same.

Yeah, I noticed.

~$110 for that 3/8 set is a damn find, though.

If they're from Advance Auto, then yes. But, I'm sure other sources still have old stock leftover.

Advance didn't carry SK before and only started getting stock to ship recently. So, everything they have should be from the "new" SK owned by Ideal.

I think it's only available online. I've never seen any SK tools in a store.

They don't have it cataloged very well. The best way to find what you want is to find the part number off the SK website or somewhere else, then search for that part number.

How can you say the new SK will be better? I don't think we've seen evidence of that yet.

Actually, there have been some pics of the new SK socket sets posted by Jori from Harry Epstein.

i see you've already ordered, but would you have considered something like http://www.tooltopia.com/gearwrench-80931.aspx Gearwrench 141pc set?

ahm

That set is made in China. Also, it comes with the bad Gearwrench ratchets, not the nicer 60-tooth model. A little pricey for what it is, IMO.

If given a choice, I'm partial to SK...always have been.I have roughly $35-$40K in tools, mostly SK. Most purchased in the mid to late 60's. The ones I haven't lost have held up pretty good. I've worn out a several specific sockets, but that's because they were used very heavily on a daily basis......

i didn't realize they had lower-end ratchets; thanks for pointing it out.

while it might be made in china - and i understand for some folks that's a deal breaker - i've been so satisfied with my GW stuff even i'm surprised. a bunch of mine is taiwanese, but it seems like most (if not all) of their stuff is now china-sourced and i haven't noticed any quality difference.

i love my SK swivel impacts, but my dad's 80's era chrome sockets are all peeling badly...

Those are very nice sets from SK.

I got my ol man a 3/8" one for fathers day as it was just what he was looking for. I think I will get him the 1/4" set for XMas.
