Questions about adding a sub panel in garage.

The garage is attached. I believe the main panel is 200 amp. Sub panel is in basement. Last fall, with the help of many folks on this forum, I ran a 240v circuit on 50 amp breaker to the garage. This was done as follows. I ran 50 feet of 6/3 romex through floor joists in basement ceiling. Since I had about 10 feet extra I just made a loop in the joist space just before punching through the garage wall. There I had a j box and ran approx 35 feet of each of 6 gauge x 2 and 8 gauge x1 across the wall, then up the wall the across the ceiling then down a post to a 50 amp leviton switch then from there to 6-50 receptacle. All has been working out well. I now want another 240v 30amp receptacle on the same post.

Plan: I will put a a smaller 8 slot sub panel on this post. I might also like to add a 120v outlet here. So the plan is 1 120v circuit 15amp, 1 30 amp 240v circuit and 1 50 amp 240v circuit. So i need to run a neutral from the j box and tie into the 6/3 Rolex there.

Can I place a 70 amp breaker in the basement subpanel to feed this garage subpanel?

If that won't work I could easily ditch the 120v circuit in the garage leaving me with a 30 amp and 50 amp circuit. The 50 amp currently powers my 80 gal Quincy compressor. I will use this receptacle at a later time for a mig welder. The 30 amp circuit will power a 3hp 3phase motor with ac drive/vfd that will run a belt grinder. This Baldor motor is 8.4 amps on 240v. If I pass on the 120v outlet, do I still need to run a neutral to the sub panel since there will only be 2 240v circuits?

So is this plan doable? Any suggestions would be helpful and very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.:headscrat

How did you run the wires to the post? In conduit I hope.

You CANNOT use a 70A breaker on that #6NM cable. You are limited to a 60A breaker.
You'll just have to plan your work so that the heavier loads do not come on at the same time.

I ran the 3wires in flex metal conduit. So 60 amp breaker it is then. Compressor is 23 fla and the other motor is 8.4 amps so that should be ok.

To backup Speedy, 60A is the max for #6 Cu.

Thanks . That makes it a bit easier since I can get a small 4 space panel now instead of the 8 space 12" wide by 15" tall panel.

FWIW....I have 50A going to my garage (but using #6 cu).....before that, it was a 30A breaker (240vac).....I NEVER tripped it....and that is with my compressor running while using one of my saws.

I don't think that I would ever trip the 60a breaker for this new sub subpanel. When I get the welder tat is specd to be on 50amp breaker, I feel comfortable that the ompressor could be run off the 30a circuit.
