Questions about compressor pump disassembly

I recently bought a old compressor to replace my insanely noisy oil-less. I got a Speedaire 20Gal. It was ugly and dirty covered with overspray (couldn't read a single model #), but it purred like a kitten so I picked it up. The name plate was missing from the pump but after some internet research I figured out its a 2Z499.

I'm taking it apart to clean it and repaint and have some questions about taking the pump apart. I took the head off and a lot of the top end has a lot dirty sludge throughout. I suspect it sucked up a lot of the overspray as this stuff is the same colour as what's on the outside. I did some quick spot cleaning and the reeds look to be in perfect condition and the cylinder walls also look really good - I confess I don't really know what I'm looking for here. Maybe I should post some pictures to get a more educated opinion?

I've never dealt with anything to do with pistons or rings before so I wanted to ask before I took it all the way apart. Is there any special way to pull the body off the pistons or will they just slide out? I don't want spring loaded parts flying off that I have to try and find on the other side of the shop. Also I planned to keep track of everything to make sure all piston parts make it back in the same spot in the same cylinder as I understand they are worn to a perfect fit. I understand I'll need a ring compressor to put it back together. Other than that I was going to put new gaskets in it at reassembly. I'd thought about putting in new rings but they're kinda costly. Maybe I can talk myself into it since it's all apart anyway.

Are there any gotchas or things I should be aware of before I dive in?

Thanks,
Ryan

Not really man. There's not much to them. Basically, a super simplified engine. I took apart a similar Speedaire, cleaned it up, replaced the gaskets and put it all back together. It's still making air in a friend's garage after I upgraded.
