Questions for Pegboard users

I'm about to get serious with the pegboard in my 1000 sqft garage and started researching pegboards and hooks. A couple of questions arose.

The Lowes and Home Depot around me only sell 3/16" pegboard- no 1/4" stuff to be found. For people using pegboard, have you had durability/tearing issues with 3/16" pegboard, or is 1/4" overkill? I do plan on hanging drills and powertools from them? Where do you even find 1/4" pegboard.

I've also seen some posts about hooks that actually have a screw to attach them to the pegboard and keep them from falling out. Durahook and Stay-put hooks from Mcmaster are the ones I've seen. They sound great, but I have seen reviews that say these hooks hold much less weight than a normal hook. This is because the design of these hooks loads the threads of the screw instead of loading a metal tang, and the threads pull out of the pegboard much easier than the metal tang will. Does anybody have any comments about this? I don't want to mount a lot of pegboard and buy expensive hooks only to have htem rip of the board.

I did my finish using lots of pegboard, I got the 3/16 from Lowe's. The 3/16 is fine but I would not use the Lowes stuff again: 1. the color varied and I had to paint everything. 2. The HD "garage liner" is a more rigid product and the finish is harder. Go with the HD stuff, I'm talking about the prefinished garage liner product.

I used 3/16" pegboard at my old garage and put up 1/4" pegboard in my current garage. The 3/16 worked fine for me, although I never hung power tools on it like I do now, such as grinders, drills, etc.

I currently use the type of hooks you mentioned - the type with a screw. I like these because they offer hooks that are really large for holding power tools, etc. I have never had one of these pull out, and I hang my grinders, C clamps, and other heavy stuff on them. Now, I do hang the really heavy stuff lower to the ground just in case but I haven't had a problem.

I bought the peg board and hooks from Northern Tool.

I was at the local Habitat for Humanity Restore place a few weeks ago. They had a few different sheets of peg board for like $3 a piece.

My channel locks and pegboard hooks have a love hate relationship. I have been horsing around with strapping the hook down with zip ties but I haven't perfected it yet. If you had access to the back of the panel, you could put a nail on the backside of the hole to wrap the zip tie around.

I have 2'x2' frames that are hinged on the side with pegboard on both sides. Think of bi-swinging bar doors. I would not have a problem hanging a drill on these boards, but mine are only 2'. If you anchored the pegboard every 2 feet, you should be fine with hanging some heavier stuff on it.

I used 3/16 throughout my garage. I haven't had any real issues with tearing. I did have a few "duh" tears when I tried to get my bicycles hung--3/16 and a bike don't work well.

Frankly, I do have some heavy-ish items hanging on the pegboard, but I do pay close attention to where the studs are to minimize any flex that will lead to a tear.

I found the 1/4" peg board at a local hardware store, not the national big box stores. I just couldn't see using anything thinner.

And the Durahook peg board hook system is awesome. I used that exclusively on my peg board, which I hang angle grinders, drills, sledge hammers, and heavy power cord reels on.

Very stout hooks that STAY PUT (which I love). They use a speicalty screw with BIG threads that don't tear up the peg board holes so you can move hooks around without worry about destroying the holes.

Regguy1's second link was a kit of this stuff, here's the company's website: Durahook by Triton Products.

As you'd expect, they have tons of hooks, loops, rods, bin clips, etc. One of my favorite is the big spring clip (see last photo below) that holds spray paint cans or cans of PB blaster or Brake Kleen.

One thing to note, because of how they are locked in place with a prong AND screw, you can mount these in any direction (up, down, left, or right) to give you lots of creativity in how you use the various parts.

Durahook looks a lot like the Stay-Put brand.

I also use little wood screws to secure the cheaper hooks:

More recently, I just cut some grooves in a 1x2 to make my own pegboard screwdriver rack:

I've got some 3/16, and I haven't had any problem with it. But I'm not hanging very heavy stuff.

For hammers, I just put long screws right into planks that I attached to the wall. It's pegboard without the holes (or the adaptibility) -- but it's strong.

Damn I wish I was organized like that.

I wish I was 1/3rd as organized as that.
I knew I joined this forum for a reason other than to drool over other peoples shops. The screwdriver holder is a great idea.
I am currently rethinking my tool organization and moving things from the tool box (currently jammed with stuff) to using my pegboards for something other than the random junk that can be hung up. I use 3/16ths pegboard mainly because I have acquired about 200 hooks over the years and don't want to change. The heavy stuff can go where the other items used to be.

Thanks, but it's messy as often as it's clean. Here it is right before I did those screwdriver racks.

But it can go from that state to clean in about 20 minutes because there's a place for everything -- and no toy/lawn-tool/whatever storage on the floor that I've got to step over or work around.

The great thing about pegboard (or wood with screws in it -- whatever) is that you can have the tools you use the most right there and handy. I always felt stupid going all the way to a toolbox drawer for a hammer or a screwdriver. And then have to put it back in the drawer when you're done.

If I'm taking out wrenches or sockets for work on the car, then I'll take the stuff I need out of drawers. But I keep that dogbone wrench on the pegboard and it takes care of most of the times you just need to get a bolt off of something you've got sitting on the bench.

IMO, why use Pegboard? Use 1/2 or 3/3 plywood and hang any tool you want with no fear of weight restrictions.

See below!

Organizational needs adapt, hopefully expand, and change. You could have tools that are lenders out (kids, neighbors, wife, etc). Too large tools hang there until you rearrange them. Your kid gets their first set and wants a place to put them, etc.

I took Jacks advise and used the locking hooks. I used the peg board sparingly in the garage. Here are a few examples.

Use tempered pegboard, it is smooth (not fuzzy like un-tempered) and very rigid, very strong. A used store fixture business will have plenty at a good price.

I only use the 1/4 inch in white and mostly the heavy duty hooks with the litle extra leg on the back that goes into a second hole.
The 1/4 inch is worth hunting for.

I screw into the studs with drywall screws useing a washer behind the head so the board will not pull through the hole with the screw in it.
If I am going over drywall I use 1x2s screwed through the drywall and into the studs and then screw the pegboard to them.

"Organizational needs adapt, hopefully expand, and change."
This is the whole reason for pegboard and why I dont use the screw on hooks.
They defeat the orginal purpose.

For some stuff I have been known to bend my own hooks useing anything from coat hangers to welding rods to the metal legs they use on election signs.

At least with the ones I have, that isn't the case. It's an oversized screw that friction fits into the existing pegboard hole. It doesn't do any damage to the hole, so the placement is just as impermanent as with any pegboard system.

I really like your shop. What do you do in it? I am outgrowing my two 1 car garages and need to get organized!

Thanks. I'm a homeowner with a race car and a 2-year-old kid running around breaking stuff. It's just a two-car box with room for one car, but I do a little bit of everything in there.

I think I posted this on another pegboard thread, didn't want to bore anyone, but I'll go ahead and post it here as well. I built the organizer below so I can move it around. The hooks are a pain so I like some of the ideas mentioned here.

I have a heap of hooks that fit into 2 holes of the peg board to lock in straight. Everything seems to keep straight and no issue of tools falling off even when I open the cupboard door

My pegboard is going up this week. Nothing fancy, full sheets from the Dumpo, standard hooks but I use those plastic clips to keep them in place, 1x2 furring strips to mount. Paul

type550 -- you can consider some variation of that setup STOLEN by me as a winter project. That will fit great above my workbench!!!

I like the above hooks also, I use them in sets to keep my hammers, ect out of my tool box.

I got really tired of the hooks pulling out when I removed tools from the board. I wasn't aware of the "screw in" type of hooks, so a couple years back I made my own. I have access to the backside of my pegboards, so I used 1/4" bolts with two nuts and two flat washers for each bolt. I sandwich the pegboard between the washers and nuts, using appropriate length bolts for what I want to hang. Super strong and rigid, and the flat washers spread the load so there's no pull-out.

Scored some brand new FREE 1/4 grey peg board... it should look pretty good next to my Gladiators.

Two sheets of 36x48 and one odd sheet 23x36 (which fits in an odd place in my garage perfectly).

I was told in lieu of using strips to mount the board, as long as I can hit studs, just use a small spacer/ sleeve where the screws go through the board and I should be good.

Does that sound like a good way to mount peg? I don't plan to hold a ton of weight... just some levels, hand saws and other small random things.

I bought mine at Home depot, went with 3/16 and it's plenty strong although I don't hang power tools etc because I have a cabinetry set for that. Just my wrenches, screw drivers etc that I use on a regular basis. Anything else is stored in the tool drawers. I framed the whole thing in first by ripping 1x2 strapping in half and setting it 18" OC I believe, that way I gain plenty of support without sacrificing any holes. I used some hangers and screws to hold the tools. Currently making some socket holders to go in the large empty space you see to the left. uploadfromtaptalk1442539391148.jpguploadfromtaptalk1442539433627.jpg

Do a search for Pegmate. Theses work on 3/16" or 1/4" pegboard and work with standard hooks.

1x2's are pretty cheap.
I screwed them to the studs and the screwed the pegboard (with washers behind the screw heads) to the 1x2's

I rip strips of 3/4 plywood that fit between holes. Then pre-drill holes through the pegboard into the strips and start screws through the pegboard and into the strips. The strips and screws are now in place to mount to the wall. Works very well and not a single hole is blocked.
