FNG to the forum...thanks in advance for any help. I have a 24x24 insulated garage in Northern Michigan. Winters easily can be below zero up there. Not looking to turn it into a sauna, but would like it around 60 in there. I have snowmobiles so the garage doors will be open and closed a few times during the day when we are riding. I am looking for some advice for the following questions.

1. Forced air or radiant--NG will be run to the garage from house. Recovery times with the garage doors opening?

2. Contract out or do it myself. Got two quotes between $1050.00 and $1200.00 to run gas line into garage from house. Thats with me digging the trench. The garage is twenty feet from the house. $2500.00 with Reznor, Sterling, or an ADP horizonal vent heater installed. Dont know if it's worth the money or not. Beleive I have the skills to run the gas..not sure if I got the time. Still in shock a little bit about the price. I'm going out of state for work for 30 days, part of me just says F*** it and pay the $2500.00. Any thoughts?

3. If I do it myself..can I bury balck pipe or do I have to use poly? Heard it is hard for non license folk to get the connectors for poly.

Thanks for the help.

Just had gas line put in last week from meter to heater for $972.
Garage is 45 ft from meter and another 30 ft piping inside garage. I dug trench and buried line when finished. Heater was 75000 btu for $449.

Gas Company where I live won't sell you the risers for gas line unless your a licensed contractor.

#1, Can't help on that one. I just put radiant in the floor, don't have it fired up yet.
#2, I can't see paying that much for running a gas line 20 feet, especially with you digging the trench. I would like to see the price breakdown on that one.
#3, Use poly. The risers are as easy to obtain as a Big Mac. I got them a few years ago when I did my pool heater, and just a week ago for my garage project. I got them both times from the local plumber's supply. At $80 each, they weren't cheap. But what is.
Good luck.

Ask the gas company how much THEY would run the gas line for... contractors are always much higher. They (gas co.) ran my gas line to my shop for about $180.00 ten yeras ago... about 100 feet if I remember correctly.

I have a gas-fired radiant tube heater in my shop. I heat 1200 sq. ft.... pretty good insulation. My heater, 80K, is way bigger than I need although it will heat up my shop FAST! I'd use a 35-40K heater in a 24X24... forget the mfg. recommendations as they will tell you that you need 60K... My 80K only runs about 12 minutes per hour on an average day. When it kicks in it roasts you.... I'd prefer a smaller heater that runs a little mor often... it probably woudn't cost anymore to operate either.
