Questions on new garage build

I'm looking at building a garage onto the side of my house. The previous owners had poured a 32x28 concrete slab next to the house but they never poured footers in it. I was thinking of just running posts around the outside of the slab and building a pole barn style garage. Anybody see any problems with building it this way?

Here is a couple pics of what I'm starting with. I used to build pole barns years ago so I think this would be an easier way to build the garage over completely tearing up concrete and pouring new.

My recommendation is that your thought process, while trying to be efficient with dollars, is not the best route long term. Undercutting the slab to put in tight post holes is a bad idea imo. Building a foundation that's different than your house is also not the best idea, if you intend to attach the framing.

Do you know if the exterior slab has any reinforcement in it? Many do not.

Well I'm trying to watch my budget on this build. Not saying I'm looking to cut corners or anything. We are only looking to stay in this house maybe another 5 or 6 years. A couple of the quotes I got from local contractors were in the $30-35k range. I can't justify spending that much cuz I won't get that much back out when I sell. For the type of house it is it's just not worth it.

That's why I was looking at going this style of garage to make it as little simpler and easier on the wallet so I can at least make back a little of what I invest

Have you looked into underpinning the slab? I'm not a concrete guy, so I have very limited knowledge here. Might be worth looking into.

Another option, notch the slab to make room for the post holes. Then pour concrete around the posts. The floor will be ugly, but I think it will support your plans.

If you're only staying A few years you might want to look into a prefab garage with a wood floor. A lot of times your Township is a lot more relaxed with those types of buildings. Depending on what your usages of the building, that might be a solution for you. I live close to Lancaster PA where the Amish built these types of buildings and they are very reasonable. Most contractors in this area can't compete with the price of those buildings that they build.around here they don't tax those buildings either because they're not considered permanent structures which is another plus.

If the slab is 4" thick, that's a typical garage floor around here. Most do not do footers, just slab on grade. It may make a difference where you are. You could "float" the slab, or dig footers around the perimeter on three sides, saw cut for one said and pin to the existing if needed.
