Questions re OBD II scan tools

I am looking into purchasing an OBDII scan tool for at-home auto diagnostics.

Currently have an 1996 Honda Civic and a 2017 Honda Accord. Would like
real-time data capability. Have looked at Innova 3130c and 3040c.
Actron also. The OTC Pro line is a bit more than I'd like to spend for
shade tree operations.

Can the forum offer guidance on what scan tools to evaluate in addition
to the ones mentioned?

Also, is an update needed for a scan tool that has auto data to say
2013 in order to read a 2017 vehicle if a specific manufacturer has not
added/changed its specific codes for the newer model yr, eg, P0420
DTC is the same in 1996 and in 2013 and in 2017?

Innova is the best. I use my 3100 series gives all the live data.

Just bought another to read ABS and SRS codes. If you call them they will tell you what models will read your cars.

I have the Actron 8690 that can do OBDI and II. I have used it on 2016 vehicles and it read the codes fine. It does live data as well. I have had no issues with it and it is simple to use. I cannot comment on any other home owner models.

Might want to look at something like Autoenginuity with the Honda bundle. It's supposed to have OEM level capabilities. I've gone to AE for my diesel truck and VCDS for my VW diesel. I can do almost everything the factory can do with either system. AE with the Honda bundle is about 450$, but you can just buy the basic scan system that will do all generic OBD-2 stuff for about 250$ and add the Honda specific package for everything else later.

According to the manufacturer's website, the 3100 doesn't display live data.

I can't find Actron 8960. Do you mean CP 9680?

Just bought another to read ABS and SRS codes.

Reading ABS and SRS or "body" codes on anything over about 10 years old is very hit and miss as there is no government requirement.


IMHO, any toll that does not have "reasonably priced" update service is NOT going to be very useful in about 5 years.

That, and why do the have such tiny screens ! Amazon can sell a 7" Fire tablet for under $40 and an 8" for under $70, why don't they buy one of them and strip out all of the "unnecessary" software ?
