Quick and dirty vice grip rack

In an attempt to declutter a few drawers in the box I pulled out most of the vise grips and then realized I needed a place to store them.

A piece of "chromed" oval tubing picked up a while ago because it was interesting and I might have a use for it someday

Milled 3/4" holes and 7/16" slots

Yep that looks like what I wanted

Found some scrap 16ga under the shear and scribed out some lines

Clipped, bent and welded

Fogged some of whatever paint was handy on the mild steel bits and screwed to the side of the box

And started populating

Tools slide in like this

I intentionally made this with only two access areas. I made it to hold 10 8" and 10 C clamp style and am not worried about having to remove a few to get to one I might need.

It also occurred to me that a 1/4" hole at the end of the slots could allow a padlock to easily lock them in place. My shop is secure so I don't have to worry about that.

First off this is infinitely better than my vice grip rack which is just a bunch of vice grips piled in a drawer! So take the next within that context...

Very nice work but some food for thought... You could have a hole at either end of each slot so you do not have to remove them all to get the size you need. Each slot can then have two sizes and you would never have to remove any to get to the size you want. Just dimple up (curve up) the ends of the slot right at the hole so they do not slide out on their own (sort of a detent). Each bar can hold four sizes with two slots per bar.

Again, infinitely better than my pile in a drawer.

I specifically didn't do that because I wanted to just slide them over to the end. With a hole at both ends of the slots you could easily knock them out and would have to be careful about not sliding the grips on the ends too far.

nice idea and execution.

if you wheel the base around a lot you might want to add a bumper-strip something to the side of the base to deaden the sound of the clamps smacking it all the live long day...

I've made mine for a while now, they can be scaled up... I've shipped them all over.

Great idea and nice work. Looks like it came from a tool company. I could definitely see this working very well.

Nice job! I would like to make something like that to store my pile.
