One of the items that my wife wanted for Christmas was a cookbook holder. I've never shopped for one before so I spent a few minutes looking at them online and decided that I could make one that she would like a bit better than a store bought one. We have an old 15 acre farm outside the city limits in Olympia, WA and my wife loves most things rustic. I used some old pallet boards and a mix of wood from the hardware store as well as scraps that I had laying around the shop. I was also able to find some aluminum sheeting that looked like copper. Both during and after assembly I used a propane torch to burn some of the edges. I also used a piece of rebar and a small length of chain to add some character by hitting the wood in random places. After it was completely assembled I stained everything but the pallet boards and finally finished it all off with a gloss clear. It cost about half of a store bought piece would. Here's what I came up with.
