Quick change system for benchtop tools

I'm looking for some ideas for a recessed mounting system for my next work bench. I can make something out of wood, but I'll be applying a fair amount of torque to some of the tools I'll be using. I've seen manufactured mounts like this in the past but I can't seem to find anything over the last day or two. Any help would be appreciated.

I like using square tube receivers for 1.25” and 2” square tube.

The products I've seen before function similar to the image below, but with angled sides to minimize slop without making it a pain to insert or remove.

2" square tube mounts are probably the most common - the same as a 2" square receiver for tow hitches.

If you look online you'll find some manufactured mounts and vises for 2" square receivers, the idea being you can use them on a work truck, like this and this.

Here's mine. I have a very narrow shop so everything is on bayonets. My bench is 2' deep x 11' long with bayonets every 12" along the bench. The receiver tubes built into the bench are just below the surface so everything stays the same height as the bench top pretty much.

In the photo you can see 3 galvanized tubes sticking out of the receivers. I keep some plain tubes in there that act as extenders that I slide out to support things (often because the bench top is too cluttered to work on everything).

The 2nd photo shows an 8' long section of tubing sitting on some of these extensions, to get some tabs welded on it's ends. It saves me clearing the (too narrow) bench to accommodate the long tubing job. If I lay a piece of 1/2' plate on the extensions the top of the 1/2" plate will be level with the top of the bench. Very handy.

First off let me say that what lis2323 has done in his shop in regards to tool mounts is what I'd like to do someday when I set up my own. I've saved several pics of his shop posted here on GJ for future reference.

Last year I bought a very heavy all steel workbench and found myself wanting to add a 2" receiver to either end so I could mount vises. I ended up mounting (2) of these bolt on receivers from HF. Initially I drilled and installed 1/2" riv-nuts and later had a friend who welds make them a bit stronger and more permanent. The price and availability fit the bill at the time and so far they've been great.

Since then I've also come across some products offered by a company called trick-tools. They offer some nice vise / tool mounts with or without a receiver.

Eventually I'd like to build a custom multi tiered display rack with all of my vises on a mount like this so at any point one could be rotated into service by simply sliding it out of the rack and into a bench mounted receiver. We can all dream right?

If you put a tapped plate under the bench and some holes thru the benchtop you could mount an unlimited number of things to an equivalent set of plates with clearance holes.

Acquiring a set of plates is more expensive than sliding tubes but there should be no need to defend against the "rock" caused by the clearance between tubes.

Here’s a system I came up a few years ago. It was a way to move and swap vises instead of drilling a new set of holes if I wanted to move vise over couple of inches or wanted to use a different vise in that location. This also applies to mounting bench tools like grinders and another tools that can quickly removed by undoing a few bolts.

You start by drilling a series of holes. Where vises would mount I drilled extra holes.





This it one on mounting plates for a vise.



Anything you can mount to a piece of plywood you can bolt to bench, use, and unbolt and stored away to regain your bench space. Every bench I have will have these holes and every bench tool, and vise will have a mounting plate. I built all new benchs since I made this first attempt so haven’t got around to making my current addition.

Yeah it is, and even better, it seems to work pretty good.

I think he went out of business, Haven't seen anything like it anywhere else.

For the guys using receiver hitch style interfaces for their tool swapping, take a look at the Curt anti rattle kit. Takes all the slop out of them.

To take the slop out of receivers I like to either drill and tap for 5/16” set screws



Or weld a 3/4” nut

I came across this nifty stand in princess auto they use for displaying trailer hitches. It would be great on wheels in a shop for your bayonet tools. I like the tray on top too. I think I'd need a bigger one though or several similar to these if I had room on the floor. I have racks up on the walls behind doors or where ever there is unused space instead where I can store the tools not in use on my bench or pedestal.
