Sounds like a nice find, welcome. :)

Do you have any pictures of your lathe?

The brand may help.

The biggest issue I've seen with a QCTP is either getting one that is too tall, or the mount on the lathe being too tall (cross feed, compound, maybe yours has something odd, don't want to suggest something to purchase that may not work).

Welcome again and best of luck on your project.

Buy the biggest ( most rigid) one that will properly work on your machine.
Look at the style of toolpost you want and they will be rated for size range of machines and you should be able to find some dimension specifications on them.
Do some quick measuring on your machine and it should become apparent which will work for you

A 13x40 lathe is going to be in the area that the AXA and BXA overlap. You could use either, I would go with the bigger BXA.

BXA

Get a wedge style tool post.

In addition to the height differential, BXA tool holders are more massive and more rigid than the smaller AXA.

Get a BXA.

BTW....Welcome to Garage Journal. If you would, could you put your state into your profile? No need for a city, but a state helps when it comes to answering or asking some questions. And you never know, you might have people in your vicinity. Thanks so much.

And be sure to check out our Fabrication Forum. There are a lot of like minded people in there with home machines. Myself, I have a 13x40 lathe, a mill, and a CNC mill, and also a surface grinder if I get it up and running. Post up some pics of your lathe when you get a minute or two

BXA

For the hobby machinist it is hard to justify the cost of a USA made Aloris. Around $1,200 with a good assortment of tool holders. But cheaper off shore posts with tool holders are available on eBay for under $200.

I like Shars because they are, to my knowledge, the only importer that puts their name on what they sell. All the rest a generic.

I put a cheaper piston BXA on my standard modern. wedge type is likely much better but this one has no problem doing what I need and like others I wasn't laying out the extra cash for an Aloris when there is so much other tooling you will want.

Phase II BXA wedge from Enco next time they have a sale.

This - have the same on my 12x36. Good parts, worth the $$$. Most of the knock-off tool holders will work on a Phase II, but not always the other way around (PII holders on a no-name post).
