In my tiny corner of this world, I would say the arbor press is close to the top of the realistic market, and the bench grinder is on cloud 9....but you folks have that stuff for "medical" use, so maybe the seller is just hoping for one to come along.

A guy on CL has a Dake with ratchet but no wheel in cleaner shape than OP but he wants 475. It's been on there a long time.

Thanks for the tips. I was thinking $75 for the grinder (its an 8 inch) and $150 for the press. Seem reasonable? Or as justanengineer points out have I, like the sellers, been influenced by "medical" stuff? Thanks

That spray job on the grinder is embarrassing -- even got some on the eyeshields -- and you'll spend almost as much time cleaning it up as you will using it. $150 is definitely a reach. And who paints over a Dayton label?

This week in the Denver CL there was a Baldor 7307D grinder with Baldor stand for $155. It sold right away, yes I was too late, but this is the 1/2 hp 7" "deluxe" model with lighted eye shields and water pot that has an MSRP of $823 and the stand MSRP is $423. So asking $150 for an American made with cast guards 1/3 hp? 1/2 hp? 8" grinder with plain eye shields, one of them broken off and a spray can "resto" is way out of line, $20 to maybe $30 is a much more realistic price. I'd expect to be replacing bearings and maybe the stones and cord on this grinder, someone who gives a grinder that kind of paint job hasn't treated it well. Without the spray can resto most non-baldor american made grinders with cast guards go for $30-$75 depending on size 6" - 8", hp and light options.

I would pass on the grinder.

The press could be a good / fair deal depending on the make, model and condition. The ratcheting presses are more convenient and thus expensive than the standard sliding handle type. Hard to guess size from the pics, but it looks like a Drake 1 3/4, which would be a 3 ton unit.

I passed on the grinder and went to look at the arbor press. The press is a Dake model 1.5 that is pretty dirty and without the rotating platen, he came down to $200, but no lower so I'm still looking. Thanks for the comments.

The Dake arbor press is a steal at $200 IMO ! It is a 3ton model--it would be nice if the plate was there but that's not a deal ender. Price a new model--you will find them in the $1400 and up range--plus shipping! Maybe some members see these for sale where they live but not me. The ratcheting and pilot wheel feature makes it useful for other tasks besides pressing--i.e. broaching.

^ agree. If the press worked properly and didn't have any missing or chipped teeth I would have bought it for $200. That is if I was in need of an arbor press right now. The wheel PLUS the ratcheting handle make it really nice and desirable.

There a 1 HP on Boulder CL for $500 right now. When I saw it I remembered your post & thought it might be the same grinder being flipped. Alas, it has a different HP rating & no lighted eye shields.

I'm guessing that was a store return that, after being written off, was visually 'destroyed' to prevent it from being returned again, and then sold en-mass to a liquidation company. Many large retailers do that sort of thing. I wouldn't have paid more than a few dollars for that one and only if I could test it first.

I'm sure you've seen some things to support what you're saying.

In my experience, the jackwagon spraybomb rebuilds are common with low-end of the food chain re-sellers.

And the acquaintance I know who buys semi-loads of retailer returns has shown me nothing that supports what you're saying. Maybe years ago. But corporate doesn't need local stores to spend money on paint; they just care about their high-volume issues, not chicken scratch like that.
