I had to cut a slice out of my drive this weekend to run a pipe underit. The drive is 15 years old. The opening is 8" wide. I made teh cut at the original expansion joint. Should I put the "cushion" back before I fill in the space. Or just fill it in solid ???

Is the cut up against a structure or is it within the driveway itself?

If it is within the driveway then I would not bother with the isolation joint, but if the cut is between the driveway and the garage foundation or slab then I would reinstate some form of isolation .

If the new concrete touches any of the existing concrete, place the expansion joint material on at least one side. If it touches anything such as a building foundation, pole, or any other object, the expansion joint material should be placed between the new concrete and the object. For your cut, I'd place it along the original expansion joint. It should look a little more uniform that way.

I was able to contact my concrete guy. He said what you did. Since it's only 8" wide and in the middle where you won't have anything heavy, tires, on it for an extended period just fill it in. Didn't do too bad a job. Definately not professional but the cut/hole is patched.

Misjudged how much I needed. Frotunately I was able to get to HD at 8:58pm. :yikes:

I would be more worried about settlement of the material below the new concrete. I would imagine you will eventually have a bump if you did not tie the new concrete to the existing with rebar/dowels. Time will tell though...
