Rebuilding an old Orbit industrial drill press. Almost have it all back together but the previous owner wired it all to the light switch and I want the light and Motor switches to work separately.. Already confirmed all the switches are working. And just because I am mixing 2 styles (Red hot and Black hot) I would feel better confirming

WALL
green-ground (frame)
black- hot (power supply to both switches)
white-neutral (neutral to both switches)

MOTOR
green-ground (frame)
red- hot (hot side of motor switch)
black- neutral (neutral side of motor switch)

LIGHT
black-hot (hot side of light switch)
white-neutral (neutral side of light switch)

Thank you might be silly but I hate redoing stuff twice

Neutral wires don't go to the switches unless they are double pole switches which break neutral and hot, which is a rare circumstance in power tools. That's why I suggested pictures.

There is no need to switch the neutral wiring. Just tie those together and switch just the hot leads

Your picture of the motor leads came in while I was posting. Are you sure that motor is not 240v? Is it convertible to 120v?

NEVER disconnect neutral/grounded conductors(think of corner grounded delta) unless the ungrounded conductors are simultaneously disconnected at the same time.

Hey everyone, I’m new to the forum. Did we ever get this figured out? I have the exact issue with an old jet drill press and am kind of a noob. Was expecting to wire black to black, white to white and ground to the body of the press. Have this red wire I’m not sure what to do with and no white wire for neutral. Was planning on wiring red to the black/red and black to the ashy/yellow, but sounds like this might not be right? I’m going to attach a couple pics of the wiring and the motor specs. Could someone reply and dumb it down for me a little like “wire the red wire to this, and wire the black wire to this.” Thanks so much in advance.

For 120v : your power cord(incoming) should have a black, white and green.
according to the motor tag, the motor should have a black, red, ashy, and yellow.
take the black and red motor wires and twist and cap them with the black cord wire.
take the ashy and yellow motor wire and twist and cap with the white cord wire.
ground the green to motor chassis.

take the red and ashy motor wire and twist and cap them together.
ground the green to motor chassis.

Hey so that’s what i was hoping to do but as you can see in the pictures there is no white cord wire. The cord going to the motor has a black, RED, and green wire, while the motor itself has black and red together and ashy/yellow together.

ok - so where I said "white - cord" use "red - cord"
twist the black cord wire with the black /red motor
twist the red cord wire with the yellow / ashy motor
this will work for 120v
If you still have apprehension, get someone that has experience check it out before you plug it in.
