Quick Dimple Die Press Setup Question

Hello all.

So researched this a bit and didnt exactly find my answer. Actually... I did but didnt.

My short goal here is to create a quick dimple die press. At the shop I help out at we dimple a lot for cages, bumpers, plates, etc (People love that stuff - I am guilty of it as well). I myself at home doing small side jobs also end up pressing in dimples quite often as well so decided to look into something quick. We have a 12Ton and 20Ton press. They work great, dont get me wrong but neither is air setup so doing it by hand is slow...
I am trying to find a way to have something maybe one pull or two pulls that is about $200 or less (I know I know, cheap idiot, but unlike most I see on here, my funding is extremely low).

My progress within research and why I didnt find my answer (Which leads to why I ask here). My idea is basically an Arbor press. One pull and should do the job. However those who had the same idea were trying to press 1/8" mild steel. Almost all the posts or answers were regarding pressing 1/8" mild steel. Now for that, I would just pony up and use our 20ton press for that or even the 30 ton we have out back. The most common we press is 16 gauge. 14 gauge is a rare cause but happens. Again, thicker, will use my 12ton or 20 ton press for those because again.. rare. The arbor press is a great idea and all but 1ton arbor press does not do the job (Tried it). I was thinking a 3ton as I found a nice one being sold from someone in Ohio on ebay for $250 shipped. However, being that it is unkown if this would be enough to work, I passed on the deal.

So my question is, what is a quick way to do dimple dies on 16 gauge mild steel sheets?

Also, I did look into the air/pnumatic setup. I like it a lot because I can convert it to a foot pedal and use both hands on what I am working on however the air compressor at my home is only a 30gal cheap compressor (Used to air up tires and a tire machine. Nothing major) Im sure it would work but is it actually quick? The ones we have tried in the past (not HF amazingly) were not quick at all. Werent doing dimple dies but just did not move quick.

May not meet your needs or work with your dies but the last set of dimple dies I made I had a threaded through hole in the lower die and through hole in the upper die. This way you can install a threaded stud in the lower die. Then just sandwich work piece between both dies and install nut and washer and run down with impact. I find this to be reasonably fast and is very versital with complex work piece geometries.

I have almost exactly what you are describing: HF 20 ton press, Air/hydro bottle jack, foot pedal, 29 gal compressor. I would not describe the jack movement as "fast", but it is very easy. And once your setup is complete, it is relatively quick since the ram only has to travel a fraction of an inch to complete the flare & retract to remove tooling. Probably only takes a couple seconds per flare.



One of those hydraulic knockout punch kits could work too.

I appreciate the suggestion but because they are so expensive, I dont think we will be welding studs onto the end of ours. I appreciate the tip though. Would work great for doing large items as well like beds and hoods.

We have used the air ones but unless you put the dimple together and have it already touching the jack side when you start, they are slower than doing it by hand. Our dies are flat with no holes in the center of the top piece so using a hydraulic punch kit isn't available for them and takes about the same time as the hydraulic jack in the press.

I appreciate it though.

I agree the air/hydro is not fast but it is nearly effortless. I just did a little test and it takes about 7.5 sec/1in travel unloaded. Manually, it took about 26 strokes to achieve 1 in.

Have you calculated the tonnage required for the flare size/type you want?

Bear with me here....
16 ga material is pretty light. Maybe modify your jack to accept a pressure gauge & see what pressure is required to complete the dimple. If less than say 175 psi use the jack as an air cyl only. That would cycle very fast, watch your fingers.
